David was born to Henry and Juanita Girod on July 16, 1936 in Salem, Oregon, the youngest of 4 children. He grew up as the son of dairy farmers, where he learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and a deep respect for the land. These early years instilled in him a love for farm life and gardening that would stay with him throughout his life.
David met his wife, Melly, in early 1959 in Salem, Oregon. They married shortly after on May 14, 1959. They went on to have 3 sons, Craig, Steven, and Robert. David served in the U.S. Air Force for 8 years, from 1954 to 1963. His time in the military shaped much of his character, teaching him discipline, loyalty, and the importance of service to his country. He was a proud veteran and always carried the spirit of those years with him.
After his military service, David transitioned to civilian life and worked as a city employee for 32 years, where his commitment to his work was unwavering. David's true joy, however, was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always prioritizing his loved ones above all else. He found immense pride in supporting and celebrating his family's milestones, and his kindness, patience, and sense of humor made him a beloved figure in their lives.
He loved polishing rocks, military and nature documentaries, watching NASCAR, and watching old movies with the love of his life, Melly.
David joins his wife of 64 years, Melly, his parents, Henry and Juanita, and his son Craig, in Heaven. He is survived by his sons, Steven and Robert, and his daughters, Kathy and Samantha, 23 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson.
A funeral service will be held at Salem Baptist Church on November 15, 2024 at 11:30 a.m.
