Suzanne T. Mogel (nee Nicholl), formerly of Swampscott, died peacefully in her sleep at Devereux Nursing Home on February 26, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Salem, she graduated from Salem High School in 1943.
Suzanne was an avid gardener and could often be seen tending her garden in front of her house in Swampscott. She loved children and animals, especially cats. Suzanne was a fabulous swimmer and loved the ocean. She was a fantastic cook and even studied and specialized in Asian cuisine.
Ms. Mogel was widely respected on the North Shore as a painter of landscapes, gardens, & still lifes. She studied extensively at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the DeCordova Museum School, Montserrat and, for more than two decades, with the noted Cape Ann watercolorist, Betty Lou Schlemm.
Suzanne painted primarily on the North Shore but for many years she spent part of the summer painting on Monhegan Island in Maine, a well-known artist’s retreat.
Ms. Mogel won “First Prize in Painting” at the Marblehead Festival of Arts in 1981 for her painting, “Eve’s Harvest” and she received numerous other accolades, including awards from art festivals in Saugus, Rockport, Swampscott and Lynnfield. Her works can be found in collections all along the North Shore, Rockport, Somerville, Marblehead, Connecticut, Florida, California, Canada, Europe, and Australia, among others.
During her long and prolific career, Suzanne was a member of the Copley Society of Boston, the Marblehead Arts Association, the Swampscott Arts Association, the Cape Ann Watercolor Painters, the Lynnfield Art Guild and Studio 8. For many years, she was a member of The Art Guild in Marblehead, a cooperative enterprise that included several painters, where she sold much of her work.
She was a warm, loving, and beautiful woman who never spoke a harsh word. She will be sorely missed.
Suzanne will forever be remembered by her loving daughters, Melinda Mogel of Somerville and her companion, Paul Garcelon Jr. of Marblehead, Laurie Levine of Marblehead, Bonnie Bishop of Florida, and Cassandra Bishop of Oregon; her grandson Daniel Levine and his companion, Amanda DiPippo of Colorado; and her daughter-in-law, Joanne Dorman. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Carrie Nicholl, by her husband, Thomas McDermott, by her husband, Ernest Mogel, by her son, Brian Mogel, and by her daughter, Julie Mogel.
Arrangements: At the request of family, Suzanne’s funeral will be held privately. A Memorial service will be held in the spring, when flowers are blooming and all are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Suzanne’s name to a charity of choice.
