Robert S. Mehrman

Bob was born on April 7, 1927 in New York City to Sidney and Sylvia Mehrman. He grew up in New York and Massachusetts and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Bob was a local radio and TV broadcaster and past executive director of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association. He was the public affairs director for Boston’s WJIB and was a booth announcer for WBZ and WCVB.

After a being diagnosed with throat cancer due to cigarette smoking and having a laryngectomy in 1990, Bob became a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program, speaking to thousands of students throughout Massachusetts and New England. He recorded anti-smoking public service messages and a commercial for the American Legacy Foundation that aired during the 2001 Super Bowl.

Bob served in leadership roles including president of the International Association of Laryngectomees. He was a past president of the Cured Cancer Club at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. Bob provided education and support to new laryngectomees before and after their surgery.

An avid automobile enthusiast, Bob participated in car rallies in the late1950’s and 60’s. He owned one of the first BMW 2002 sedans that was imported into the U.S. In 1969, Bob was one of the founding members of the BMW Car Club of America and served as the club’s first President.

Bob moved to Brooksby Village in 2011 and immediately became an active member of the community. He was a member of the Resident Advisory Council, involved in the Brooksby TV station and co-taught an iPad workshop.

Bob was preceded in death by his recent companion, Dorothy MacDonald and his wife of 57 years, Selma Mehrman. He is survived by his sister, Joan Mehrman; son, Barry Mehrman (Ann); grandsons, Brian Mehrman (Angela), David Mehrman (Kristi); great-grandson, Milo; Richelson nephews and nieces; cousins; Dorothy’s children and the entire MacDonald family.
