Joel grew up in Peabody and graduated from St. John’s Prep in 1957. He then went on to graduate from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst and received his J.D. from the University of Maine Law School. Joel was a linguist in the U.S. Army and served in Turkey. He was a prominent attorney, practicing in Boston and Peabody for more than 40 years. He was active in the Danvers community serving as an Incorporator for Danvers Savings Bank, President of Pillsbury House, and President of the Jaycees. He retired to The Villages, FL in 2010 where he made numerous special friends. Joel is best known for his kind nature, generosity, and quick wit and loved spending his summer vacations at Eagle Camp on Lake Champlain in VT.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mina; son David of Beverly; daughter and son-in-law Emily and Kevin Sheahan, grandchildren Sam and Alexis Sheahan of Georgetown; brother Lawrence Goldman of Baltimore, MD; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Julie and Tom MacIntyre of The Villages, FL, Cindy and Mark Strumph of Windham, ME, and Joyce and Philip Norton of Rocklin, CA; nieces, Shayna and Jenna Strumph, and Ann Giroux; as well as several other loving nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, Theodore and Sophie Goldman of Peabody, MA.
A service will be held on Sunday, June 5th at 10am at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, Salem, MA. Interment to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery, Sabino Farm Road, Peabody, MA. A celebration of life will be held at the home of Emily and Kevin Sheahan immediately following the interment. A memorial observance will be held at the Sheahan home on Monday June 6th through Wednesday, June 8th from 1pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, MA.
