PORTER, Calvin G. 96, most recently of Brooksby Village, Peabody, longtime resident of Stoughton, Brockton & Lynnfield, MA, entered into rest peacefully on February 24, 2017, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Arline R. (Minsky) Porter, and previously to Celia Levine Porter who predeceased him.
Devoted father of Maureen Porter of Hadley, MA; Deborah Knopf and her husband Kenneth of Norton, MA; Jon Silverman of Delray Beach, FL; and Diane Quinn and her husband Kerry of Georgetown, MA. Cherished grandfather of Ryan Ecclestone and his fiancée Catalina Ortiz of Waltham, MA; Timothy, Sara, and Robert Quinn of Georgetown, MA; and Sofia and Justin Knopf of Norton, MA.
In addition, he leaves his brother Allen & sister-in-law Selma Porter of Springfield, NJ and brother Abraham Porter of Olympia, Washington. His sisters, Ida Daub and Bertha Smith predeceased him.
Cal was raised in Stoughton, MA, the son of Minnie & Maurice Porter. He served as a Pharmacist’s Mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Boston University with a B.S. in Education and taught physical education in Stoughton, MA for a short time before spending the remainder of his teaching career in the Brockton school system. While teaching, he earned his Masters of Education degree and his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from Boston University. During his lengthy career, he served as a coach and mentor.
He enjoyed many hobbies including gardening and stained glass, but his true passion was playing and refereeing volleyball throughout New England.
He was an active member of many educational and health organizations throughout his life. In addition, he was a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity, Knights of Pythias & Temple Tiferet Shalom in Peabody.
Funeral services will be held at Brooksby Village, MacIntosh Clubhouse Chapel, 100 Brooksby Village Drive, Peabody, MA 01960 at 11:00 a.m. on February 28th.
Interment will follow at the Temple Beth Shalom Memorial Park, 16 Buxton Road, Danvers, MA 01923.
Family & friends will meet for refreshments at Brooksby Village- The Garden Room at the Braeburn Building following the interment.
