Dennis Dunn Sr. Age 71 passed peacefully from COVID 19 on January 31, 2021. Loving Husband to Sarah (Culkin) Dunn for almost 50 years. Father to Jacki Dunn (Greg Rothberg) and Dennis "Denny" Dunn Jr. (Sherry) and "Paw Paw" to Charles "Charlie" Grimm (Megan Punches) and Sarah Wray. Brother to Linda (Dunn) Culkin (Robbie) and Rodney ( Joanne) Dunn, Brother In Law, Uncle and Friend to many.
Dennis was born on January 29, 1950 and was raised in Thebes, Illinois. He first met his future wife, Sarah, in grade school. Although he didn't know her name at that time, he was always looking in her classroom to see her. Their first date was a blind date and Sarah had no idea it was with "that boy" from grade school. That was the start of a life long relationship. Other than a few years when Dennis was away in the US Navy, Sarah and Dennis have been together. And would have been married for 50 Years in just a few more months, on May 1st.
Dennis and Sarah have two children Jacki Dunn and Denny Dunn. Growing up, the "kids" would learn many things from their dad. Perhaps the most important, was the value of family and having a good time. They knew they could always count on their dad to provide a good laugh. This same fun loving spirit and love continued on to Dennis' two grand children. They would certainly agree that their "Paw Paw" was always a loving and funny guy.
Dennis served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy for 2 years during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home to Thebes, Illinois, he went to work almost immediately for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, spending most of that time as a Lock and Dam Operator at Granite City Lock # 27. Dennis continued to serve his country with the "Corps" for 40 plus years, until his retirement in 2009.
Dennis grew up as a Lutheran Christian and happily became a Catholic Christian in 1999. He embraced his Catholic faith totally and lived it out in a spirit of prayer, devotion and Christian Service. For over 20 years he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, advancing to the level of 4th Degree. Many an hour you would find him at the "Knights' Hall" frying fish, wings, calling BINGO, other charitable works or just hanging out with his dear friends.
Dennis had a great sense of humor, was always good for a practical joke, always in a good spirited way and just an all around great friend to all he encountered throughout his life. He is truly loved by many and will be dearly missed.
