Raised in Reading, Massachusetts, Bill attended Reading High School before serving our country in the United States Navy from 1968-72 and as a reservist from 1972-74. During the conflict in Vietnam, Bill served at Camp Tien-Sha Danang, and later aboard the USS Simon Lake. Afterwards, Bill continued to serve his nation and community in the employment of the United States Postal Service for 30 years before retiring to St. Augustine Beach, Florida.
Bill was a passionate member of the congregation at St. Paul United Methodist Church as a trustee engineer, where he also participated in the Family Promise, Emmaus, and Prime Timers ministries. A locksmith by trade, Bill was a consummate fixer, tinkerer, and builder. He plied his trade with the Alhambra Dinner Theater for years as a set builder.
Bill is predeceased by his father, Thomas Edward Pentz; mother, Josephine Ada Pentz, nee Cluff; his brother, Edward Ellis Pentz; and two sisters, Shelia Pentz-Donnegan and Olive Josephine Pentz. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Volland Pentz; his two daughters, Megan Schaudel (Jim) and Melissa McCrary (Brian); and six grandchildren, Adam, Mary, Lauren, Eileen, Conor, and Hugh. He also leaves behind his sisters, Norrice Pentz Mitchell and Mildred Pentz Kiefer, along with his niece, Candance Pentz Berlinghoff (Shawn), and grandnieces Deanna, Marley, and Rose.
Bill and his family would like to recognize the exceptional care received by Flagler Hospital, Cancer Specialists of NE Florida, and Community Hospice.
His family is holding a memorial service at St. Paul United Methodist Church the morning of Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 10:00 by Rev Dr Simon Osunlana. The family requests blue attire, Bill’s favorite color. A lunch celebrating Bill’s life will follow the service. Bill will be privately interred at the National Cemetery. Instead of flowers, Bill’s family asks for donations on Bill’s behalf to St. Paul United Methodist Church or Community Hospice.
