Samuel W. Ault III, 77, passed away on September 11, 2023 in St. Johns, Florida with his loving family at his side after a valiant battle with ALS. A longtime resident of Savannah, Georgia, he was born in Alexandria, Louisiana and was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel W. Ault, Jr. and Carrie T. Ault.
He graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota, Florida and later earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida. He married the love of his life, Mary Moss, in 1966. They enjoyed 57 happy years together. Sam enlisted in the United States Army in October 1966 and was later commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He proudly served his country in Vietnam in 1968-69 with the “Jumping Mustangs” of the 1/8 Cavalry, 1st Air Cavalry Division as an artillery forward observer. Sam was proud of his 33-year career in support of our nation’s military which earned him the Bronze Star with valor and many other awards during his time in the U.S. Army, Florida Army National Guard (1/116 Field Artillery), and civil service. He made it a priority to mentor those who worked under him, and to ensure that those who worked hard and excelled received the promotions and recognition that they deserved.
Sam was a longtime member of the 1st Cavalry Association, the 8th Cavalry Association, American Legion and Train Buffs of Savannah, Georgia. He was a parishioner of San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church in St. Johns, Florida. His attention to detail was reflected in his lifelong hobbies of stamp and coin collecting, as well as his ability to design and construct landscape and carpentry beautification projects. He thoroughly enjoyed his father/son travels to our nation’s majestic National Parks and his summer trips to Walt Disney World with his grandchildren.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. This is a deep loss to his family, who will continue to honor and miss him every day. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ault; his children Amy Kirk (Jason) and Samuel W. Ault, IV; and grandchildren, Andrew Kirk and Katie Kirk. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ALS Association (https://www.als.org/) in memory of Sam. Lieut. Col. Ault will be laid to rest with full military honors at Jacksonville National Cemetery on September 29 at 11:00 a.m.
