Veryl William Wortell, 80, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2015. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Barbara. He is survived by two sons, Michael and Kevin (Romana), grandsons Evan and Brendan, sister Faye and several nieces and nephews
Veryl was born on October 2, 1934, in Sacramento. He graduated from Placer High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army after graduation. After his military service, he met and married the love of his life Barbara. Veryl worked for the Department of Justice for 35 years. He dedicated a great portion of his time to community involvement that included Southgate Recreation and Park District (Past President) and the North Sacramento Historical Society. He was a long time, active member of American Legion Post 608, even serving as Commander. He was involved with the honor organization for U.S. Veterans - Forty and Eight. Veryl was deeply patriotic and loved his country.
Affectionately known as Pop, his hobbies included reading about U.S history. He was an avid Oakland A’s fan and loved his annual pilgrimage to Spring Training with family and friends. He loved fishing and the Shasta Lake houseboat trips with his buddies.
His greatest joy was his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, February 24, at Harry A. Nauman & Son; 4041 Freeport Blvd; Sacramento, CA 95822. Interment will be private.
