

Shirley Pearl Vandiver, a lifelong resident of the Sacramento area, passed away peacefully in her own home surrounded by her family on the morning of May 7, 2014. She was 88 years old. Born in Elk Grove, CA on December 10, 1925, Shirley grew up in Clarksburg, CA and graduated from Clarksburg High School in 1942. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, after which she married and settled in Sacramento Pocket area. She remained in her home for 64 years until her passing. As Mom would say, I put down deep roots. Mom was an avid gardener and took great joy in growing beautiful things. She loved her family and devoted her life to their growth.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, William Vandiver, sister Jeanne Greenleaf of West Point CA , and John Gorter of Clarksburg CA and is survived by 5 children: Cassy Edmondson, Steven Vandiver (Melodee), Laurie Vandiver, (Mike Cunningham), David Vandiver and Lisa Guillen (Ruben), as well as two sisters, Margaret Webber of Connell, Washington and Claire Fenocchio of Clarksburg CA. She also leaves 5 grandchildren, 11, great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Mercy medical team, Mercy Hospice and her caregivers for their kind and diligent care. Contributions may be made in her name to a charity of your choice or if you get the urge, plant something green in her memory. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 1 pm, at Harry A. Nauman & Son, 4041 Freeport Blvd., with a garden reception to follow at the home of her daughter. Interment will be private.
