Robert Henry Murrey, the second of three children, came into the world on August 17, 1936, to Steven Murrey and Delcini Townsell in Wynne, Arkansas. To this union was born three sons. The Murrey family moved to Madera, California in 1946.
Robert, also known as Bob, went to Madera Union, high school, and starred on their basketball team through his junior year. In those days playing sports was viewed as unacceptable for Christians in the church and after giving his life to the Lord, he could not participate on the school team his senior year. He completed and graduated from high school in 1955.
Robert/Bob and the Steven Murrey, family joined the Hull Avenue Church of God in Christ where they lived down the street from. After accepting Christ, he worked diligently in the church in the youth ministry, and as a Deacon. Robert/Bob loved to sing with the men’s group of the church.
He developed a keen interest in the church pianist named, Ida Chatman. She moved to Sacramento, California in 1955 and joined the Progressive Church of God in Christ. As their relationship grew they were united in holy matrimony on September 6, 1956, in Madera, at Hull Avenue Church, and moved to Sacramento where Ida worked and attended church. To their union were born three sons: Robert Steve, Clifford Dale, and Paul Dennis. Prior to the passing of his wife, Ida they were blessed to be united together for 50 years before her transition from earth to glory.
He began his work journey for the State of California at The Franchise Tax Board after their marriage. He later became Supervisor over the Mail department until retiring in, 1999, to care for his ailing wife.
He started going to Progressive Church of God in Christ right after their marriage and within a couple of weeks was considered, "A member in good standing" at the church. He began working as a Deacon, and within a few years began serving as the Chairman of the Deacon Board. The church at that time did not have a large membership and part of his duties became, lawn maintenance, church janitor, Chief financial officer, served on the Trustee Board and Board of Directors, and was a trusted aid, confidant and assistant to the founder of the church, Jesse E Copeland. While serving as Deacon, he was requested by the late, Bishop W.W. Hamilton on a few occasions to teach courses on what it meant to serve in the capacity of Deacon. He without a doubt set the standard of what it is to be a church Deacon.
He meant very much to, and touched many lives through genders and generations in his 68 years of dedicated service to this church’s ministry.
He leaves to cherish his memory, three devoted sons, Robert S. (Sylvia), Clifford D. (Jacqueline), and Paul D. (Karen), all of Sacramento, CA; eight grandchildren, Terrence Jermaine, Eric Terrell, Marques Allen, Derek Anthony, Brittany Nicole, Jalen Paul, Le'Andre Steven, and Janoel Avant; six great grandchildren, Jayden Terrell, Cameron Anthony, Taylor Michelle, Joelle Macie, Brielle Naomi, and Amari Rae. Proceeding him in death were his parents, Elder Steven and Delcini Murrey, two brothers, Sylvester Murrey and Clyde Murrey. He has numerous relatives, friends, and a large church family where he faithfully attended and served for over sixty eight years.
