Mary was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 4, 1933, the seventh of seven daughters of Joseph and Maria Caffaro. Mary graduated from Prospect Heights High School in 1951. Immediately after graduating, Mary went to work at the New York District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, where she met 1st Lieutenant Richard Ng, US Army, whom she would marry on December 18, 1954.
Mary spent the next 25 years following her husband Richard’s Army career, through tours in Japan, France, Germany, and in the United States, finally settling in San Francisco, CA. She continued to work for the Army, throughout those years, while raising two children, and supporting her husband’s career.
Mary retired in 1998 from the South Pacific Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, after over 40 years of federal service, and moved to Antioch, CA, to be closer to her beloved grandsons.
Mary was a devoted Catholic, and a member of parishes wherever she lived, but was particularly active at Saint Ignatius of Antioch, in Antioch, CA, and Our Lady of the Assumption, Carmichael, CA.
Mary was known for her zest for cooking, entertaining and gracious living, and was renowned for the parties and dinners she gave and for the beautiful home she kept. She was also a shopping enthusiast – well known to the salespeople at Saks and I. Magnin, and was fashionable in the extreme, still wearing her Prada sunglasses at the age of 87.
Mary is survived by her husband of almost 66 years, Richard, her children Richard (Debbie) and Lisa, her grandchildren Richard (Brittany) and Andrew (Alison), and her great-grandchildren, Alex, Maddie, and Aurora. She is also survived by the oldest of her six sisters, Frances Gagliardi, 105.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 15th, 2020, from 2 to 5 p.m., at Nicolletti, Culjis and Herberger, 5401 Folsom Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95819. The burial will occur on Monday, November 16th at the National Cemetery in Dixon, however, due to COVID, the burial will be private. Donations in her name may be made to the National Shrine of Saint Jude.
