Marc Brandon Hanson, age 46, died suddenly of heart failure in his home on the morning of Wednesday, August 25, 2021, in Sacramento, California. He is survived by his wife, Shaina Aber-Hanson, and their two young children, Jasper and Enzo Hanson, as well as his parents Joyce and Russ Hanson, brother Steve Hanson, sister-in-law Erin (Findley) Hanson, niece and nephew Ella and Jacob Hanson, and an incredible community of extended family and beloved friends. Family and friends will celebrate Marc’s life on September 12, 2021, at 1:30pm at Holy Spirit Church in Sacramento, to be followed by a block party near the church on Weller Way.
Marc was born on August 21, 1975, in Visalia, California, to Joyce and Russ Hanson. Despite being premature and causing some anxiety upon his arrival, Marc was a bright light in the family from day one. He kept his parents and big brother Steve on their toes and brought them endless joy and laughter. It was when Marc was just a small child that Joyce and Russ noticed how he would twirl his hair while thinking, a habit he would carry with him into adulthood. Marc and Steve spent their childhood creating their own contact sporting games, stretching the structural integrity of their family home to its limits, and negotiating space and resource allocation in the backseat on annual family road trips to Minnesota and Connecticut. This is where Marc first honed the skills that would later prove indispensable in his work as a public servant and advocate.
Marc attended Mount Whitney High School in Visalia with a tight circle of friends who have remained close and supportive. He swam, played soccer and was All-American in water polo.
Marc majored in philosophy and political science at Santa Clara University, where he also played on the water polo team. During his junior year he spent a semester studying at American University, taking his first steps toward a career in public service and advocacy as an intern on Capitol Hill. His freshman year roommate, Mike Danielson, became his lifelong friend and together they built a large group of dear friends from Swig Hall, to Leavey Pool, Bellomy Street, and beyond. He earned his Masters degree in Urban Planning from the University of California Los Angeles in 2002.

A memorial service will occur Sunday, September 12, 2021 at 1:30 PM, 3159 Land Park Drive, Sacramento, CA 95818.
