The Reverend Lloyd R. Hanson’s death was July 20th, 2022, at the age of 91 years, 9 months, and 19 days. He was born November 1, 1930, to Carl and Ruby Hanson at the McPherson, Kansas hospital. His family lived on a farm 2 miles north of Roxbury, Kansas.
Later the family’s residence was rural Lindsborg, Kansas. He graduated from Smoky Hill Grade School and later Lindsborg High School in 1949.
Lloyd was active in 4-H, receiving many awards including trips to the American Royal in Kansas City and National Dairy Congress, Waterloo, Iowa. He showed his registered milking shorthorn heifer at the Kansas State Fair.
He received a Carl Raymond Gray (Union Pacific) scholarship to Kansas State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education in January 1954. At the same time, he was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant in the US Air Force. While awaiting his Air Force assignment, he taught vocational agriculture at Beverly Rural High School in Beverly, Kansas.
His Air Force assignment began the day after Memorial Day at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He was assigned to be trained at Tyndall Air Force Base. After training, his assignment was the 11th Air Division, Fairbanks, Alaska. He spent 18 months at a radar site near Fairbanks at the end of the Korean War.
Immediately after separating honorably from the Air Force in 1956, he started training for the Augustana Lutheran Church. He spent the spring semester at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas.
He married Marion Shoreen that summer, July 1956 at Angelica Lutheran Church, Los Angeles. Seminary training began in September 1956 at Rock Island, Illinois. He graduated with a Master of Theology degree in June 1960. His internship was at Bethany Lutheran Church, Lyons, Nebraska.
His first call was to a two-point responsibility to Marion Hill Lutheran Church, White City, Kansas and to establish a new mission congregation, Faith Lutheran Church, Junction City, Kansas.
He served as treasurer of Maridahl Children’s Home and delegate to the Kansas Council of Churches. Faith Lutheran was organized as an integrated congregation in 1963.
Two adopted children joined this young couple.
The Hansons accepted a call to Nazareth Lutheran (Now Light of Christ) Turlock, CA in October 1966. Lloyd served as president of Turlock Council of Churches and as president of Mt. Cross Bible Camp. In Turlock, two more children joined the family.
In October 1975, he accepted a call to Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Carmichael. During his 18 years, he served as president of the North Area Ministerial Association, Dean of Lutheran Church in America, Southwest SUN District (churches from Bakersfield, CA to Sacramento, to Reno and Salt Lake City), President Sacramento Area Ecumenical Conference, and Chair of Interfaith Service Bureau (now Interfaith Council of Greater Sacramento). This association awarded him a “Power of One” crystal in 2013.
Death came to Marion on March 24, 1991. Lloyd retired from active ministry in July 1993. He married Donna Forsberg Crick on October 28, 1995.
He served as interim pastor at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Sacramento 1997-1998. Then he served as interim at First English Lutheran Church, Sacramento for twelve years.
Lloyd joined the SERTOMA (Service to Mankind) club in Junction City in 1962. He became a member of the Sacramento Valley SERTOMA in 1994 where he served various roles from board chair to president. They awarded him the SERTOMAN of the year award in for 2018-2019.
He was predeceased by his stepson Steven Crick and wife Donna. Survivors are son, Jeff Hanson (Sheryl) Concord, daughter Kristen Foote (Rick) Cottontown, TN, son Doug Hanson (Debbie Jones) Menlo Park, daughter Kara Pryor (Peter) Sacramento, stepson Craig Crick (Laura) Reno, NV, grandchildren Jake (Maddie), Jon, and Annie Hanson, Luke and Hazel Pryor, Kyle and Jaime Crick, a sister Lola Ford, Baldwin City, KS, a brother Larry (Debbie) Hanson, Rantoul, KS, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A private burial will take place at East Lawn Sierra Hills, and a public celebration of life will take place on July 29, 12:00 PM at Lutheran Church of the Cross 4465 H Street in Sacramento.
