Grandpa,
I was just up to California to see the family and I stopped in to see you as well. I am glad that I did. My dad brought flowers (white roses) and he and I spent some time with you. I miss you so much grandpa. You and I spent a lot of time together and I will always have pleasant memories of you and the many things that you taught me. You helped to mold me into the man I am today and I am proud to be your grandson. I will always miss you and I will try my best to carry on your wonderful legacy in the Boyle family. Thank you for everything you gave me grandpa. I love you.

John,, I've always been so proud of you: you were a kind and loving brother to me, you served our country with honor, and you and Alice raised a wonderful family. And by the way, you brought Bill Gorman into my life.  Do you think he fell in love with the skinny thirteen year old or the "pretty" eighteen year old?  I'm betting on the later! Dad, you were such a tough guy and married to one helluva gal! I can't believe it was a year ago that you left us. I think of you every day and miss you so much. Grandpa,
You have always been an inspiration for me. I will never forget all of the lessons you have taught me and am grateful for all the memories I have with you. I miss you very much and think of you all the time. I love you Grandpa.

Christmas season is a time for family gatherings and unconditional love for all. Although we shared many new memories this year between family and friends we felt a deep void without John's presence. We missed having his smiling face and wonderful wit at our family gatherings this year. May he forever know that his memory will live strong and everlasting within each of us.  Until the day we meet each other again in parodies we will miss him deeply.

Merry Christmas Grandpa! It has been a year since our last Christmas together and this year was different but very fun. Jason and Melissa made us a tasty prime rib and grandma made us a tender turkey you would have enjoyed. I have started my new job at AT&T and it is very interesting. I am learning a lot and enjoy the opportunity to improve my knowledge. We miss you a lot but think about you all of the time. I have several photos up in my house of you and grandma on a cruise and am hoping the family will get together in the new year for a family cruise vacation we can share. Funny my mom never wanted to cruise before but now she is the Cruise Queen and of course only wants to sail on Princess Cruise Lines....can you imagine your daughter Sharon (my mom) a bit of a princess? Hahahahaha....Shawn and I will be visiting New York next year and hope to see many sites...maybe we will be able to see the site you and grandma met?! Who knows....it may be a shrine now but I am sure once the guards hear who we are related to they will escort us in for a guided tour. A hero is never truly gone as he will always be remembered by those who love him and will carry on his legacy of great deeds. You will have to forgive us if the stories tend to grow with time as words sometimes are too small for a man's life. We toast you every year on your birthday and know in our hearts that you continue to watch over the family. Until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of his hands. Merry Christmas, Dad. We had a different Christmas this year. Mom made the usual BBQ turkey,stuffing, and gravy with Karon's assistance. We combined our meal along with Melissa's to make a Holiday Feast fit for the Blessed. And let me say, both the turkey and prime rib were delicious! There was very little left by the end of the meal. Everyone - the Boyle's, the Murray's, and the Venturi's were not only full from the meal but from the love that was dished out. 
Dad, there was never a moment that we did not feel your presence, along with our brother John and wife Cindy. You will live in our hearts, minds, and souls forever. 
We will watch over mom and keep her close so no worries there. But your guiding light is what gives her warmth and helps her face each and every day.
"Love you" never seems enough.....

Dad it's Christmas day with the family, boy do I miss you carving the turkey. It  seems like I should be giving you a hair cut and BATH, I know, as you would say "I don't need to, just had one! I'm missing all the "AL-JO" stories.Thinking of you all the time. It's not the same and definitely not easy. Love you, Dad!

Dad, we made it to Venice and are all together even though we were coming from 3 different directions. We thought of you when we saw the gondoliers and remembered the time you came with mom, Sharon and Bryan. This Christmas feels so strange without you here but we are carrying you with us in our hearts.

This was the eulogy Alison presented at her grandpa's funeral for her and her siblings:
Things I learned from my grandfather: 1.Be grateful for what you have. I'll never forget his stories about being fed only bones at the floor of the kitchen table. Or how he was posted as a child for rent. While we giggled at their obviously fabricated origins, I now realize these anecdotes served a larger moral purpose, guiding us children to be humble and appreciative. 2.Cherish where you came from. Grandpa was true to his Irish roots and served his country faithfully. 3.Table manners. “When I push my spoon away from me, it's like little ships sailing out to sea.” 4.Live to the fullest. Even in your 80's, you aren't too old to get up on stage and dance. You also are not too old to climb up and f ix the roof. 5.Don't take shortcuts. You cannot dig your way to China, especially not through your grandparent's backyard. 6.Men most certainly can cook, and homemade pizza is always, undoubtably better than store bought. John Boyle -- or as I've always called him, Grandpa -- was a strong and charismatic man whose life was devoted to service - to his family, to his country, and to his faith. He was dedicated to the church. He led and supported his family. And he loved his wife endlessly. Always a hard worker, Grandpa labored with his hands and taught his family to be self- reliant. I admire the dedicated ethos and morals he inspired in his family. He preferred to live simply. Material wealth was not a concern of Grandpa's; creating a comfortable life for his family and setting an example were of utmost importance. Grandpa loved to be on the seas, to travel, to cook, and to joke. He could captivate a room - Grandpa enjoyed being at the center of attention and making others laugh, especially his grandchildren. With a mischievous twinkle in his eye, he told fantastical stories and let us ride in the bed of the pickup. He set up the ladder, allowing us to climb on the roof of the shed, as long as we didn't tell Grandma. It's bittersweet to bring up these memories. I'll miss his humour most of all, the way he was able to light up a room. I'll miss his repeated stories, told time and again. I'll miss hearing his history about service in the Navy. I'll miss his homemade pizza and Thanksgiving turkey. I'll miss his arm wrestling challenges and tough guy act. Grandpa, you were deeply loved and will be sorely missed, but your memory will be cherished forever

This Christmas season isn't the same without you.  I am truly blessed to have been your daughter.  We had many good times over the years and I am thankful for those memories.  Thank you for all the stories and sayings you have left us all with.  I miss you and I love you!!  Merry Christmas Dad!

 Bryan and I went to Monterey and yes, "we know the way to Monterey"....We stopped by Johnny's site and reflected for a bit. We strolled along the ocean and even saw a whale jump out of the water several times. What an impressive site. I know you saw many in your days out at sea. The tiny scrawny Monterey Pine you gave Shawn two years ago is getting so big. It looks so strong and one day we will be sitting under it on his deck. Well, Dad, I know you were with us on this journey in spirit. I could see you in so many places.  Love always..

Today we remember Pearl Harbor and all the brave men and women that served.  You always had your flag (Colors) hanging on this day. I know Mom put it out to show honor and respect. I recall your story of Uncle Jim being there on that horrific attack! 
Dad, we are trying so hard to attack this holiday season without you being here physically....we have your memories, objects, pictures, and the wonderful DVD that Annemarie/Tim put together to honor your long life to reflect upon. Our hearts are filled with the joy and love for being a vital part in your life. There will never be a day without your influence!

Grandpa, you will be sorely missed this holiday season. The past year has been a tough readjustment without you here, but I think you would be proud to see the way in which your family has come together and supported each other through the difficult times. I think the interesting thing about death is that it reminds us of our human condition, to live life to the fullest, to be grateful for what we have, and to show love to those around us. 2013 has been a year full of change for me; I moved over 1000 miles and started graduate school this fall. My grandmother on my dad's side of the family also passed this August; I think of you both often. Though we will be spending Christmas in Italy this year, you will be in our thoughts, we'll share your stories, and light a candle for you in some of the beautiful Catholic churches. I love you.

Thanksgiving was tough without you, it just didn't feel right without you there making sure the turkey was bar-b-qued just right and and having your pumpkin pie with whipped cream.  We watched the DVD from your 90th birthday and drank an Irish toast to you. I miss you so much!

Thinking about you this holiday season, Grandpa. It's going to be a tough one without you hear. The family all misses you and talks about you often. I always enjoy revisiting your old stories and sharing laughs with others about them. I love you and will always keep you in my thoughts.

Sorry I haven't written in a while- that doesn't mean you aren't in my thoughts every day. Thanksgiving wasn't the same without you this year. I felt guilty being away from the family during this difficult time of the year. I was looking at my pictures I took of you last Thanksgiving, you look so happy opening your gifts and reading the cards we gave you. You also looked so happy when my mom brought out your birthday cake... oh how you loved your nummies! 
I went to Ireland about a month ago. I thought of you the whole time I was there. I just pictured you in your cap and Irish sweater and heard your voice saying, "there are two types of people in the world- those who are Irish, and those who wish they were Irish." The Irish country side is breath taking. I now know why you were so proud of your Irish roots...although I would never want to live in that weather year round. I wish you had been there with me.

Today I am doing a 9 mile (roundtrip)  hike to Feather Falls to celebrate this special day. You will be with me every step of the way and when we reach the falls; oh, what a view! Thanks for being a fighter your entire life.  Freedom is important to each and every one of us. Today, Veterans' Day is a time to reflect on that! It was nice to honor you on such a beautiful sunny morning with the flags flapping in the warm breeze overlooking all the great veterans this country has to offer. Love you, Dad!

Well, the flowers were fantastic that we took to you on Father's Day. You would have been so pleased at the number of people visiting the veterans. What a statement!

The Memorial Day service was very nice.  It was a wonderful way to stop and think about those that serve to protect our way of life.  I highly respect those brave men and women !  My prayer runs deep within my soul for all of you. God Bless!

Dad, your girls, mom and Bryan spent some time with you on Easter.  It was  beautiful break before a storm. They finally have the grass around your marker and it looks very nice, you would be so proud. I miss you every day and love you very much.

I had to wait a few days before I could write.  I miss you so and this was hard for me because I miss you so much.  Went to see you on Easter Sunday and want you to know how much I love you. Hope you liked the lilies we left you Easter Sunday. The green grass that surrounds your marker is beautiful and the sky was full of white puffy clouds as we came to visit. There isn't a day that goes by without reminders or thoughts of you. I still say, "my folks" or "dad and mom". Sometimes I awaken in the wee hours of the night and think of the wonderful times I had growing up in a true "family" atmosphere with a dad and mom that gave so much love. How lucky I was! You were such a fighter your entire life to your very last breath. I know that my family has inherited a lot of your spunk and honesty just by the way they are living their lives today. Saint Patrick's Day has come and gone, but I know we all toasted your Irish heritage; especially that blarney you liked to feed us! As you watch above, every now and again, give us a nodge to be true to ourselves and others. I love you, Dad!

The news just came to me via facebook about the passing of such a fine "gentleman."  I had the beauty of working along side "Mr. Boyle" when I was a teacher at HFS.  I then took great pride in watching him bring his family "lunch" after he retired.  I loved sayiing "hi Pops"....he was a wonderful, inspirational and great mentor to all of us.  You will be greatly missed "Pops."  My thoughts and prayers to all of the Boyle family.

Mr. Boyle was a remarkable man for our young children to learn from; his strong work ethic, adaptability, kindness towards others & especially loving bond to his wife and children were genuine articles of a leader. We were blessed to have you in our lives!
