Imelda (Mel) Guadalupe Schroeder, long time resident of Sacramento, was united in heaven with her husband, John, and two sons, John Jr and Paul, on September 27, 2017. Imelda was surrounded by her children who adored her and her loving and attentive caretaker, Gabriela Robles. The family feels very blessed and grateful for the care Gabriela gave their mother when they couldn’t be there and even when they were there. She was an angel to Mel and the entire family! Imelda was born on October 1, 1932 in Claypool, Arizona. She was raised in Tucson, AZ with her seven siblings: Armando, Elva, Ruth, Francisco, Martha, Margaret and Miguel. Imelda’s first language was Spanish, however, she was very fluent in English and wrote beautifully. Her mother, Guadalupe, was from Aguascaliente, Mexico and her father, Benjamin, was from Durango, Mexico. He provided for his family as a carpenter and barber. She met the love of her life, John Schroeder, in July of 1953. They were married in November that same year. Together they had 6 children; Agnes, John Jr., Paul, Donnie, Mark, and Marcella (Sally). Mel was a homemaker and a dedicated military wife who followed her husband all over the world while he was in the Air Force. After her children had grown, she became a loving caregiver and interpreter for those in need and less fortunate. Imelda and John spent a lifetime feeding the hungry, clothing and housing the poor, sitting with the lonely, and nurturing the sick. She was the true embodiment of a Franciscan, and truly loved like Jesus would. She was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to all who knew her. Her wisdom and kindness will be carried on for generations, and she will be missed by all. Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Mon, Oct 2 at 4:00pm at St. Francis of Assisi, 1066 26th St, Sacramento; Rosary at 6:00pm with Celebration to follow. Survived by her children Agnes Kuster (Greg); Donnie Schroeder; Mark Schroeder (Sarah); and Marcella Kvick (Jorgen); her 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. A Mass of The Resurrection will be held also at St. Francis of Assisi on Tue, Oct 3 at 10:00am with Committal Services to follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 7101 Verner Ave, Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, please send flowers to your mother if you are lucky enough to still have her, or donate to Loaves & Fishes of Sacramento. A special thank you to Mercy’s Hospice (particularly her loving nurse Kathy Ferge), her long time friend Chaplain Lanny, the Franciscans who came to visit her and sit with her, Dr. Furaji, and to Penny who brought her communion every Monday.
