Dean was born on December 10, 1948, in Sacramento, CA to Ben Thun Lee and Sun Ho Fong Lee. As a patriotic young man, Dean enlisted in the United States Army and served as a military policeman in the Vietnam conflict from 1968 through 1969. In 1971, Dean completed his military service and was honorably discharged from the Army and returned to his hometown. In 1972, he married Jeanette Ging Hom and they were joined for over 50 years in matrimony. They raised a daughter and a son, Cheree and Bradford, and he was the proud grandfather to his grandchildren, Oscar and Margaret.
