Greg attended Rumford High School and studied welding at WCVTI. During his early years, he was a very accomplished boxer. As a welder, he was employed all over the state and country wherever the work was. Greg designed and built "The Austin Heater" with the help of his brother Pep. At the time it was one of the highest quality and most innovative hot-water heaters in the industry. After an injury forced him to leave the welding trade, he held many titles including landlord, real estate developer, horticulturist, mechanic, and small business owner. Greg was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was also a car enthusiast and enjoyed racing, snowmobiling, flying RC planes, playing the drums, and golfing and was known to get "the bug" whenever he found a new hobby. During his midlife he had a particularly strong interest in bass fishing, traveling all over the state, day or night for that elusive monster catch. After getting his son, Cody, into go-kart racing he realized that he could build higher-performing engines than were currently on the market. He opened Austin's Racing Engines out of his garage which later morphed into Austin's Small Engine Repair, providing services for any type of small engine. As Greg settled down golf became his biggest passion of all. Always working on his latest tip or trick to improve his swing, he even built a simulator to practice during the winter months. In his last round together with his son they teamed up with friends Mike and Sonny to win the 2024 Bear Pond scramble at Turner Highlands. Greg's greatest accomplishment, however, was being the great father, family member, and friend that he was. Always willing to go to any length to help somebody out without any expectation in return.
Greg is survived by his son Cody Austin of Livermore, brother Preston "Pep" Austin and wife Diane of Mexico, brother Stephen Austin of Carthage, brother-in-law Earl Canterbury of Florida, and seven nieces and nephews. Greg was predeceased by his father John "Jerry" Austin, mother Faylene Austin, and sister Cynthia "Cindy" Canterbury.
Per Greg's request, there will be no formal funeral. Family and friends will be invited to a graveside burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to a local animal shelter.
