She was born March 15, 1928 in Willmette, Illinois and moved with her family to St. Augustine, Florida when she was 8 years old. She grew up in downtown St Augustine and attended school there. She learned her way around St Augustine riding her bicycle and held a number of jobs in her teen age years including being a hostess at the Fountain of Youth attraction. She was affectionately known as “Sammy” to her friends and family. It was in St Augustine where she met her future husband, Wallace Wardell Boyce of East Orange, New Jersey, who was a Navy cadet at the Cecil Field Naval Air Station during the Second World War.
Shirley graduated from Florida State University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree as a Home Economics major. Subsequent to graduating from FSU, Shirley married her long time sweetheart Wally Boyce and moved to northern New Jersey. She began her career as a high school home economics teacher, however she quickly became a full time mother and church leader in her adopted State of New Jersey.
Shirley and her husband relocated to Roswell, Georgia in 1983 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Roswell and participated in many activities, including president of the Garden Club, in the Horseshoe Bend sub-division where she resided.
Shirley enjoyed cooking, traveling, tennis, spending time with family and actively participating in Church activities. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and followed the Fox News channel on a daily basis.
Preceded in death by her son Glenn Wallace Boyce and her husband of 62 years Wallace Wardell Boyce, she is survived by her son Bruce and daughter in law Carolyn Boyce of Colorado Springs, CO., son Ron and daughter in law Kathy Boyce of Cumming, GA and daughter Nancy and son in law Richard Skuse of Roswell, GA.. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Shirley was a devout Christian Scientist. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in her name to the First Church of Christ Scientist, 10920 Houze Rd., Roswell, GA..
