He is survived by his loving mother, Elizabeth Torres, and father, Jaime Torres Zavala; his two older brothers, Benjamin Torres and Christopher Torres; his rescued pup, Luna; his grandmother, Maria Isabel Zavala Landaverde; and his nephew and niece, Nicholas Torres, and Sophia Torres.
Ricky was born on July 19, 1994, in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Milton High School in 2013. A true son of Georgia, he lived there for his entire life, except for a short interval (i.e., adventure) in Kansas City, Missouri, while he was in his early twenties. In his birth state, he had called many places home, including Atlanta; Lake Lanier, where he was living, with his father and Ana Cosman, at the time of his death; Lawrenceville; and Alpharetta.
Ricky was – and will forever be – adored by those who knew him. With an irreplicable and spirited personality, he exuded love and youth. Often quiet, he tended to keep close to the chest how clever and bright he really was, revealing his quick wittedness only at the most opportune moments, so as to expertly provoke raised eyebrows, ear-to-ear grins, and every so often, tear-inducing laughter. Good humor was a staple part of being Ricky. The pride in his eyes was unmistakable after forcing a smile or a laugh. His mantra in life was to never take it too seriously.
Now, the tears that remain are ones of sorrow and grief for a life unfairly taken, an angel too soon gained. His family and friends will always remember his natural athleticism, odd proclivity for conspiracy theories, adoration of (and magnetism towards) animals, and his natural musicality. Ricky was also a hard laborer and a dutiful son. At the time of his death, he worked for his father’s construction company. For the prior three years, Ricky was ever improving himself, and he showed promise in one day inheriting and running his father’s corporation himself.
Most of all, Ricky will be remembered for the love he offered. He treasured his mother, whom he had a remarkably close and special relationship with. He also christened himself the “fun uncle” to his dear Nick and Sophia, which role he filled purposefully and aptly. Put simply, Ricky was always there. For everyone. Birthdays, holidays, lake days, concerts. His absence will leave behind a pit that cannot be filled. An empty seat at every table. But, as time carries on, the family’s wish is that Ricky’s memory recasts itself from sadness to love, warmth, and smile-inducing thoughts
Our joint human condition is that everyone’s days are numbered. No one knows the number. In 28 short years, Ricky was able to cultivate a legacy of laughter and love that his family and friends will carry with them, as part of their very fabric, every day until their last day.
To Ricky – until we see you again, watch over us. Help us not to take life too seriously, and to remember to laugh. But above all, thank you. Thank you for the life you lived. Thank you for the joy you caused.
We love you, our dear Ricky, forever and for always.
