I will never forget Richard Becker, whom I have called "Dad" since I was about 14 years old.   He was a mentor, a confidant, a role model, a friend, and a father to me, and I have many wonderful memories of him - from late-night political,  philosophical,  historical discussions at night,  to his teaching me how to take apart and clean a motorcycle carburetor on the kitchen table; of our constant, unspoken "battle" in which he would assign me chores (his secretly hoping that they would be grueling, tedious, and teach me a staunch and methodical work ethic) and make them bigger and more challenging, while I tried to find new ways to do them more efficiently so that I could do fun, "teenager" things like go and jam with the band at a friend's house( I still remember the wry, half-angry look he gave me when he saw me driving all the leaves to the brush pile by linking a corner of the tarp to my minibike and darting back and forth to the brush pile until the leaves were gone ---- at first I thought he was going to kill me, and then he burst out laughing).    I remember his calling my brothers and me and my new cousins  - Billy, Chris, and J.K. - "the gang" and trying to contain us while we pretty much tormented the family, the neighborhood, and ourselves whenever we got together.  I remember family get-togethers with Uncle Phil and Aunt Sarah; trips  with him to Missouri, Colorado, and California; also  his characteristic "grunt", the "Mmmmmmmmmm!" sound he would make, which was an almost universal substitute for any remark whatsoever, and could mean rejection, approval, frustration, humor, ignorance, pride, a realization, or take the place of a witty rejoinder which was called for in the moment.  I remember him helping, teaching, and leading by example.   I remember his always being there when I needed him.    And I remember that I love him very much, am grateful for all that he did for me, and will miss him for the rest of my existence.  I love you, Dad.  

Angela and family, I think of Angela and Richard at Christ Church Episcopal in Norcross the last few years and am saddened by his death. May the love of family and friends sustain you during this time of loss. My prayers are with you, Karen Swenson, Suwanee, GA
