It is with broken hearts that our families announce the death of Randall Keith Joseph Boyd, suddenly, at only 59 years old. He was loved and admired by so many; especially his children, Brendan, Taylor and Connor. There are no words to comfort the countless others whose lives he colored with his love of music, cooking, reading, excellent game playing, golfing and unique sense of style. Randy lived his life well for the time he was with us.
He started his unique journey at a very young age when he decided to give his all to the sport of hockey. He sacrificed a lot when he left home as a young teenager to pursue every young man’s dream of becoming a professional athlete. Notable, was being drafted by, and his accomplishments with, the Ottawa 67’s! He was named Co-Captain and awarded the coveted Max Kaminsky, best defenseman award in the OHL, during his time in Ottawa. He was then drafted 53rd overall in 1980 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Randy continued his NHL career, playing 257 games, over a period of eight years, with the Chicago Blackhawks, NY Islanders, Vancouver Canucks and several IHL and AHL teams along the way. He was able to extend his career by playing 2 seasons in Vienna Austria and coaching a CHL team in Memphis, TN. When his professional hockey career came to an end, he gave back to the sport he loved by coaching his sons and so many others, for over 10 years, for the Atlanta Fire youth hockey travel program in Alpharetta, Ga.
Randy is survived by his three children, who he loved dearly, Brendan, Taylor (Callum Bond) and Connor, and his ex-wife, Kathleen Gilmore. He also leaves behind his three sisters in Canada - Sandra, Linda and Karen and sister-in-law Nancy. He is predeceased by his parents Keith and Katherine "Kool Kat" , and stepdad Robert "Big Bob" Cresswell. As well, he is predeceased by his two beloved brothers Jim (JB) and Ron (Bubba). His brother’s-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s here in Georgia and NY all feel a deep sense of loss. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, Georgia and N.Y. who will miss his teasing ways. Aunts, uncles, ex-mother-in-law (Virginia Gilmore) and many cousins, will also now cherish their many memories of times spent together in Coniston, Ontario, Georgia and NY. No family gathering here or in his hometown of Coniston, Ontario, will ever be the same. He helped cook the delicious meals while playing DJ and usually beating us in games as he enjoyed his cocktails and cigars with Bobby.
Rest In Peace knowing you were truly loved and will be missed dearly.
