Murray Carl Shelton Sr. passed away on March 22, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on November 15, 1940 in Memphis, Tennessee. As a young child, Murray worked odd jobs to help support his single mother and three sisters. Growing up in poverty instilled in him a passion for hard work and education. He earned his Bachelor of Business from Memphis State University. Over the years, Murray has opened his heart by financially assisting dozens in their pursuit of education and a better life. Following a successful sales career with Gulf Oil and Sweetheart Cup, he moved his family to Atlanta in 1981 to acquire Murray-Weyand Sales and Buccaneer Inc.
Murray truly loved his work and mentored his three sons to have a similar entrepreneurial spirit. Murray is survived by Barbara Shelton, his wife of 48 years: sons Murray Shelton Jr. (Anna Shelton), Michael Shelton (Amanda Shelton), Jeremy Shelton (Lena Shelton) and daughter, Kelly Sanderson. He is survived by his 3 sisters Sue Wing, Nashel Houldin, and Sarah Billingsley (Max). He is survived by 10 grandchildren who love him immensely, Taylor Shelton, Reagan Shelton, Brooke Shelton, Zachary Shelton, Molly Shelton, David Hammond, Josh Hammond, Hannah Hammond, Ashley Sanderson, and Loren Sanderson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews along with numerous friends around the country. For those that knew Murray well, he will be remembered for his faith, generosity, honesty, and integrity. We will all miss him dearly and know he’s resting in peace with the Lord.
Visitation will take place at Roswell Funeral Home on March 25, 2016 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. A Celebration of Murray’s life will follow at Roswell Funeral Home on March 26, 2016 at 10:00am.
