While we didn’t know Mary very well, we know she raised two fine gentlemen. As any parent knows this is not by happenstance but through persistent hard work, love and affection. You are both evidence of a loving mother. As you traverse this valley please know that our thoughts and prayers are with both of you and the extended family.

Mary was unlike anyone I have ever met. My dad (Gary) & Mary were cousins & close growing up. Mary was four years older, & it's easy to see why dad would have been drawn to her. They were both hilarious &, at their core, very sweet. But they both had a trenchant sense of humor & highly active/critical minds. They could make everyone laugh, but beware: you might unwittingly find yourself on the receiving end of one of their barbs! I met Mary when I was a child at a Bahler reunion. Unlike dad’s, Mary’s humor was drier than dry ice, which intimidated me then! With her stare she could silently say, “Ok! What have you got say? C’mon! Speak up!” Looking for an opponent to engage with. But when I saw dad & Mary laugh together & reminisce, I was quickly reassured. Plus, once you started speaking up, Mary loved interacting with you! She was inquisitive & quick & she & dad would have been the perfect jousting partners. I'll remember how closely to her heart Mary held the memories of Bahler get-togethers. Mary & I were the same age when we lost our dads (who were the same age when they died). After dad passed in 2019, Mary would repeatedly tell me how much she loved him, & how she wished she could go back & recapture those days. Hearing from someone how much your loved one meant to them is a gift like no other, & Mary gave me that gift repeatedly. It was clear that just below her tough exterior, she was sensitive & loving with a deep desire to connect. Her memories were often bittersweet. As much as she could find the satire in everyday life, she missed those bygone Bahler days, and her cousins & parents who had passed. I'm so very sorry for the family's loss. I'll miss Mary. But I do find a small bit of solace in the thought that she gets to laugh & connect with my dad again, & with others she had lost along the way. I think of Mary & dad, off at their own picnic table, just like at a Bahler reunion. I just hope that they’re not getting jabs into *too* many people !
