Mary is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, John D. Fields; her daughter, Ginger (David) Buttrill; her grandson, Britton Buttrill (Luz Colpa), her granddaughter, Marianna Buttrill; and her great-grandson, Rowan Buttrill. She is remembered by her twin sister, Martha and her younger brother, Thomas. Mary was predeceased by her daughter, Nancy, and her older sister Melvina.
Mary and John were high school sweethearts who first met when Mary sang in a trio group called "The Three M's" with her sisters, and John served as the emcee. Their love story spanned a lifetime, marked by their shared adventures as John worked for Norfolk Southern, traveling across Georgia and enjoying their travels to England, Ireland, and Italy.
Mary had a diverse and fulfilling career, working in advertising, sales, and serving as a full-time substitute elementary teacher. She also worked in church catering and was known for her excellent cooking skills, with her specialty being her famous cherry yum-yum.
Mary was a devoted Christian, raised in the Methodist church, where her faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a spiritual warrior, a prayer warrior, and her daughter Ginger describes her as her best friend and confidant. Mary’s unwavering faith and love for her family were evident in everything she did.
She cherished her countless days spent nurturing and adoring her grandchildren. She encouraged Britton in his writing and teaching career. She devoted countless hours to supporting Marianna in all her successes and challenges. She was a constant loving presence at all family events, both joyous and sorrowful.
A visitation for Mary will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 1770 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, GA 30062. Following the visitation will be a funeral service at 1:00 PM. Mary will be laid to rest in Green Lawn Cemetery & Mausoleum, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076.
Mary will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her many nieces and nephews, including Cindy, Mark, Bryan, and Stephen, Danielle, and Josh, were a joy in her life. Her legacy of love, faith, and dedication to her family will continue to inspire all those who were touched by her life.
