She was the oldest child of four children born to the late Munford Lewis Walker, Sr. and Essie Blue-Walker on April 3, 1948, in Marshallville, GA.
Mamie attended D. F. Douglass High School where she graduated with high honors in 1966. While there, she was a dedicated Library Assistant and sang in the choir. Mamie was also a cheerleader and a member of the track team, the Future Homemakers of America, and the Student Library Assistant of Georgia (S.L.A.G.). Following graduation, Mamie remained active with the D. F. Douglass High School Alumni and attended many reunions.
Mamie furthered her education by attending Carver Bible College of Atlanta, GA (1967-1971) and graduated at the top of her class. She was an expert Ping Pong player, where she always ended up in the finals. Mamie was VERY involved in her studies, and she loved debating the Word of God. Mamie also served on the school's yearbook committee, and she enjoyed participating with the Christian Street Ministry on Friday and Saturday nights in downtown Atlanta.
While attending Carver Bible College, Mamie met the love of her life, Reverend Dr. Frank Lewis. On May 13, 1972, they united in holy matrimony and from that union, they were blessed with one son, Aubrey Ramon. In 1975, Dr. Lewis was called to pastor Friendship Baptist Church in Duluth, GA, followed by the call to pastor Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Roswell, GA in 1983. Mamie faithfully served as First Lady at Friendship and then at Zion until Dr. Lewis’ passing in 2014. While at Zion, Mamie passionately served in multiple ministries, to include the Deaconess and Women’s Ministries and the Twelve Keys. She taught Wednesday morning Bible Study and Children’s Sunday School. Wherever she was needed
...she was there.
Mamie was very active in the North Fulton community. She was a member of the first Board of Directors of the Ed Isakson YMCA, in Alpharetta, GA. She also served on the Board of North Fulton Charities. As respected community and ministry leaders, in January of 2020, the City of Roswell renamed Dobbs Drive, Frank Lewis Drive. Today, memorial benches can be found bearing the likeness of both Reverend Dr. Frank and Mamie Lewis, a testament to their extraordinary legacy.
In 2020, Mamie transferred her membership to Refuge Church in Woodstock, GA under the leadership of Dr. Darold E. Footé. While there, Mamie was a dedicated and faithful member until the time of her death.
Her indelible mark in life was her love of the Lord and her family, her loyalty as a friend, her infectious smile, contagious laugh and her no-nonsense approach to the things that mattered most.
Mamie was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Dr. Frank Lewis; her father, Munford Lewis Walker, Sr.; her mother, Essie Blue-Walker; and her brother, Nathaniel Walker.
Mamie's unforgettable life and memories will be cherished by her son, Aubrey Lewis; her brother, Munford Lewis Walker, Jr.; her sister, Tereatha Walker-Reeves; her two Godchildren; Richelle Gross and Richard Gross and their mother, Wanda Gross; her Spiritual Goddaughter, DeBórra (Anthony) Rimple; a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and her two church families.
