SSG, Larry W. Harris, U.S. Army retired, 72, of Dawsonville, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2019 at his residence. Born in Mobile, Alabama, he had lived in Dawson County since 2010 when he retired after 37 years with the Mobile County Juvenile Court. Larry retired as a Staff Sergeant from the U.S. Army, with combined 20-year service in the U.S. Army Reserve and the U.S. Navy. He served as an MP in Vietnam (Navy), and in Army Intelligence in the Bosnian Conflict and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded numerous medals including the Bronze Star. Larry was very active in the Vietnam Veterans of America North Georgia Chapter #970, served on the board of Veterans Affairs of Dawson County, and was a member of Etowah Masonic Lodge #222 and other local organizations. He was a deacon at Grace Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Paula Harris, Dawsonville; son Nicholas Harris (Michael Conn), Tallahassee, Florida; step children Jennifer Pouyadou and Alex Pouyadou, Birmingham, Alabama; brothers Louis Harris, Jr. (Nancy Harris), Mathews, Alabama; and Randy Harris (Becky Harris), Dawsonville; and numerous other relatives.
A memorial service was held December 27, 2019 at Grace Presbyterian Church. Rev. David Jordan officiated. Interment service was held later that day at Georgia National Cemetery.
