Jon Bailey Watson, of Alpharetta, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at North Fulton Medical Center, following an injury suffered by a fall at his home. Jon was born in Gainesville, Florida on October 1, 1959 to Dr. and Mrs. J.B. Watson, Jr. At the age of six, he moved to Auburn, Alabama with his family and was educated in the public schools of Auburn, graduating from Auburn High School in 1977.
Jon followed his father, brothers and sister in attending Auburn University but soon decided to pursue what would become his lifelong trade and profession when he joined the ranks of Auburn Electric. He moved to the Atlanta area in 1982 and rose through the ranks of several large electrical contracting firms. He established himself as a “go-to” expert in project planning and management, code compliance and commercial electrical projects of some of the Atlanta area’s largest building projects.
He also had a gift for playing various musical instruments, including tuba, bass guitar and piano, having studied under well-known Auburn High School band director, Mr. Tommy Goff in addition to having a natural gift for playing and arranging music. He especially enjoyed spending time with his immediate family and could often be found at the Lake Martin home of his sister, Pat and her husband Jim.
Jon was preceded in death by his father, Dr. J.B. Watson, Jr., his mother, Frances Bailey Watson, and his sister Pat Watson and her husband, Jim McCoy, also his Father-law Wallace Gregory. He is survived by his wife Sondy Gregory Watson, daughter, Nicole Watson, stepson Austin (Kait) Matthews of Atlanta, stepdaughter Amber (Adison) Plyler of Charlotte, NC, and Mother-in-law Wanda Gregory of Pamplico SC; beloved granddaughter Sophia, and two beloved grandsons William and Waylon Plyler. He is also survived by brothers Mike (Cindy) Watson of Opelika, AL; Joe (Becky) Watson, of Camp Hill, AL.; Jonathon Adam Watson of Gainesville, FL; nephew Kevin (Maran) Watson of Auburn, AL; nieces Jennie (Ronnie) Patel of Camp Hill; Bailey (Will) Meadows of Dadeville, AL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Auburn University Foundation or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
A memorial service will be May 15th from 2-3pm for a private family service and from 3pm-4pm for a public visitation.
