John W. Goodin, 62, of Suwanee, Georgia (formerly of Marietta, Georgia) died peacefully on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Emory Hospital, John’s Creek after a courageous battle. John was born in Lafayette, Indiana on September 20, 1958 to the late Floyd and Lucille Goodin. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and subsequently attended Purdue University as a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. John completed his bachelors of science in engineering at Purdue in the spring of 1980 and soon thereafter married Julie Mennen (daughter of the late Robert C. Mennen and Betty Swatts Mennen) June 14, 1980.
John and Julie relocated on various occasions as John continued his engineering pursuits, ultimately becoming Vice President of the Atlanta branch of the Tom Barrow Company. Prior to his recent move to Suwanee, John and his family resided in Marietta for 30 years, where he was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Outside of his professional pursuits, John was a respected coach, incredible teacher, devoted friend and dedicated family man. John thoroughly enjoyed golf, fishing, boating and debating the state of the Atlanta Braves. However, John’s greatest passion was his family. John dearly loved his family, always looked forward to weekend gatherings with his children, and took every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren—to whom John was known as “Papa.”
John truly cared about people and spent more time listening to others than he did speaking. He was a man of admirable character and faith who chose his words deliberately to provide helpful insights of love, integrity, wisdom, and encouragement.
John is survived by his wife, Julie Mennen Goodin; his three children, Janae Goodin Howell (Beau) of Valdosta, Georgia, John Robert Goodin (Hannah) of Smyrna, Georgia, and James William Goodin of Atlanta, Georgia; and three grandchildren William Avery Howell, Adeline Elizabeth Howell and Emery Ann Howell. John is also survived by his sisters, Linda Murray of Franklin, Indiana and Jane LeRoy of Ashburn, Virginia.
