James J. Mayes, Jr. (Jim) died peacefully in his sleep from a long battle with Parkinson’s disease on Friday, September 20, 2024 at the age of 75. He was born on December 27, 1948 at Crawford Long in Atlanta, Georgia and was the son of the late J.J. Mayes and Dorothy Luke Mayes.
Jim was a graduate of Rockdale County High School and went on to the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Building Construction. Jim was fiercely loyal to the Yellow Jackets, keeping football season tickets for 51 years and a proud member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Guam.
Jim was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife, Shelley Westbrook Mayes; son, James Shelby Mayes (Karen); daughter, Laurel Mayes Floyd (Wes) and grandchildren, Charlotte Westbrook Floyd and William Russell Floyd.
Jim worked for Bellsouth for 27 years, retiring to start his own consulting company focusing on software process and improvement. He ran Mayes Consulting for 10 years and then worked at CGI for 5 more years in software estimation.
Always having a deep love for music, he played piano, bass guitar, mandolin, harmonica, keyboard and sang. He played with several different bands and sang with the choir for many years. Late in life, he took up painting and drawing.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the Chapel at Roswell United Methodist Church, 814 Mimosa Blvd., Roswell Georgia 30075, on Thursday October 3, 2024 at 2:00 PM.
