Hugh Stephen Spruill passed away on November 5, 2016 at the age of 90. He is survived by his children Beth Saxe (Robert) and Sam Spruill (Marsha) along with his grandchildren John Saxe and Catherine Jones (Matt) and his brother Edwin Spruill. Preceded in death by his wife Martha Spruill and his sister in law Nelda Spruill.
Hugh was born in February 1926 to Carey and Florence Spruill. He was the fifth generation of the Spruill family to be born in what was rural Dunwoody, Georgia. He graduated from Chamblee High School and went on to Georgia Tech. College was interrupted by WWII, Hugh joined the Navy and served on the aircraft carrier the USS Hornet. He returned to Georgia Tech and earned his degree. His love for Georgia Tech remained with him all of his life. He was a life long member of the Dunwoody United Methodist Church where he served on many committees and boards. He was the first Boy Scout Master for Troop 266 based at Dunwoody Methodist. He married Geraldine Jameson of Chamblee and raised Beth and Sam in Dunwoody. He loved his grandchildren and was very proud of the young adults they became. He was a successful business owner and cared deeply for his employees. He cherished the outdoors, had huge vegetable gardens, and enjoyed reading. He loved the game of golf and set up a golf scholarship at Georgia Tech. Hugh was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club. Later in life he married Martha Criminger and they shared time between Johns Creek, Georgia and Highlands, North Carolina.
Hugh's Funeral will be held in the Chapel of Dunwoody United Methodist Church on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 11:00am. The family will receive friends in the church parlor at 10:00am prior to the service. He will be buried in Arlington Cemetery in Sandy Springs.
