Dr. Hope was born October 19, 1931, at Crawford Long Hospital, to Henry Melville Hope, Sr. and Sylvia Shepard Hope of Atlanta. Dr. Hope attended R.L Hope Elementary School and North Fulton High School.
In 1952, Dr. Hope earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in commercial art from The University of Georgia where he was member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Dr. Hope pursued a call to Christian ministry, earning his Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary and, his Doctorate from Luthor Rice Seminary.
On June 17, 1955, Dr. Hope married Betty Ann McFadden of Spartanburg, South Carolina, who joined him in a lifetime of Christian ministry.
Over his three-decade career as a Presbyterian pastor, Dr. Hope was called to serve: Pearl Presbyterian Church in Pearl, Mississippi, First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Mississippi, First Presbyterian Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi, Vineville Presbyterian Church in Macon, Georgia and Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church in Greenville, South Carolina.
In 1986 Dr. Hope started a second phase of his professional ministry and joined Mission India. Over the next several decades, Dr. Hope introduced thousands of people to evangelical Christian missions through his leadership, teaching and travels to India.
Dr. Hope’s smile, wit and genuine concern for people developed a host of deep friendships. His rich life included extensive travel to South America, Europe and Asia. He was a gifted writer and artist, authoring many articles and publishing several books while producing vibrant oil paintings. Dr. Hope was a sports enthusiast who, despite his degree from the University of Georgia, was a loyal season ticket holder for Georgia Tech Football, his hometown team.
Dr. Hope is survived by Betty, his wife of 67 years; his sister, Cristina Hope Oliver and her husband, Dr. John W. P. Oliver; his daughter, Sharon Hope Hansard and her husband, William Michael Hansard; his son, Henry Melville Hope, III and his wife, Patricia Dohner Hope. Dr. Hope delighted in his grandchildren and their spouses: Russell Matthew Waits, Kelly Elaine Waits, Melissa Lauren Gunter, Jacob Lloyd Gunter, Mallory Martin Hope, Victor Couto Tiribás, Henry Melville Hope IV, Lucy Campbell Hope, Robert Lawson Hope and Patrick Donald Hope and his great-grandchildren, Camilla Hope Waits, Isaac Lloyd Gunter and Sylvia Lauren Gunter.
A worship service in memory of Dr. Hope will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1438 Sheridan Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30324. The family will receive visitors at the church starting one hour before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
