Glenn C. Smith died August 19, 2014, early Tuesday morning at Wellstar Hospital in Marietta, Georgia. He had battled debilitating nerve damage in his hands and feet leaving him bed ridden for over a decade. Early this year, he was diagnosed and treated for lung cancer. Remission lasted for only a couple of months. Recent tests indicated that the cancer had spread into his bronchial tubes.
Glenn was born May 25, 1939, in Marietta, Georgia to Marvin A. Smith and Fannie Mae Gasaway. He grew up on a 40 acre farm in East Cobb graduating from Sprayberry High school in 1958. He married Sue Moss shortly after graduation and they had their only child in 1962, Susan Smith. He supported his family by re-upholstering furniture, his parent’s occupation, and worked in the grocery business until he joined Lockheed sometime in the 60’s for a 30 year career.
He often spoke fondly of the days when he grew up on the farm where there was simple food, hard work, and playing meant riding an old mule to see neighbors or strumming his guitar and singing in the shade. He simply liked entertaining and hearing people laugh. He could have people in stitches telling a good story about living in rural Georgia. Those of us who knew him well will always remember his description of a visit to old Doc Bannister in the 50’s and 60’s.
His gift for music led him to join the Joy Masters quartet in the 80’s. He shared his faith through his music. He traveled with the quartet to churches even as far as Ohio for a weekend until his health starting failing in the mid to late 90’s.
He married Ruby Smith in the early 90’s. Their relationship spanned for a couple of decades where she was his primary care giver during the last decade of his life.
Glenn’s Faith in Jesus Christ was his comfort and strength during his years of ill health. He witnessed to strangers or anyone that he though needed Christ in their lives. Reading the Bible and listening to ministers of the Word were daily activities.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Blair of Woodstock, GA, two granddaughters, Jennifer Blair and Melissa Blair, both of Acworth, GA and one great grandson, Braiden Blair of Acworth, GA. He is survived by three sisters: Margie Dobson of Marietta, GA; Beverly Gandy of Roswell, GA; Clista Vocks of Spring Branch, TX.
Glenn will be missed. He is enjoying his reward by singing with the heavenly angels.
