George Leonard Massey

George Leonard Massey, age 88, of Milton, GA, passed away on September 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. George was born at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on June 9, 1935 to Herman Massey and Virginia Massey. One of five children, his love of family began at birth and remained a constant source of joy.

George graduated from Bass High School in Atlanta,Georgia and served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He went on to receive a degree from Atlanta Law School. He began his professional career with Lawyers Title in Atlanta then moved to Fulton Financial which became Fulton Federal Bank. Here he rose to the position of Executive Vice President. At the same time George was also an active member and past president of the Roswell Rotary Club. Following his successful banking career, George and his business partner, Bobby Jones, built houses in the Acworth Area. Following this, he found success in real estate development and the purchase and sale of heavy equipment. He found great joy in bringing new life to the treasures he found and had an affinity for fixing just about anything. He was happiest being outside covered in grease, working on his tractor, and listening to his transistor radio play a country western station.

George was a loving husband to his late wife of 49 years, Alice, with whom he shared 4 children. His greatest accomplishments were being a father and a grandfather. As their biggest fan, he could be counted on to dispense words of wisdom, sound advice, a kind word, and a shoulder to cry on. As adults, his family saw George as a hero, teacher, and friend. He enjoyed sharing anecdotes with everyone he met and was never without a funny story or treasured memory to pass along. George would entertain his family regularly, especially during traditional Massey birthday dinners. On February 14, 2015, George married his beloved wife Nancy Vest Massey, growing the family with the happy addition of her 2 children and their families. George cherished spending time with his family and friends, who he cared about deeply, making everyone who knew him feel loved. He enjoyed each moment life had to offer, appreciated even the smallest interactions with people and truly treated everyone with kindness and respect.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Massey; His wife, Alice; brothers, Kelley Massey and Richard Massey; and son, Glenn Massey. George is survived by his spouse Nancy; his children Debra (Eric) Andrews, Allen (Lynn) Massey, and Bill (Terri) Burnham; Nancy’s children Renee (Bob) Moffa and Andrew (Marcela) Vest; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and his siblings Joe (Terry) Massey and Janie Massey.

A graveside service for George will be held Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Green Lawn Cemetery & Mausoleum, 950 Mansell Rd, Roswell, GA 30076. Following the graveside service will be a reception in the Event Room of Roswell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has kindly asked that donations be made to The Dementia Society of America (dementiasociety.org/donate).
