He was born on April 14, 1936 in Des Moines, Iowa to Harold "Mac" and Betty McKinney. He attended Lincoln High School.
In 1936, he moved to the Netherlands with Townsend Engineering, eventually starting his own company and lived there for 20 years.
He returned to the US in 1983 and settled in Atlanta, Georgia.
He was an avid sports enthusiast. His hobbies included car racing both the USA and Europe; skydiving; scuba diving; and his favorite, sailing.
He sailed his 42 foot sailboat from Holland to Florida. The Dutch TV made a documentary of his journey called, "Going Across ".
He is survived by his brother, Dennis McKinney of Des Moines; daughter, Kelly Zelinsky of Ankeny, Iowa; sons Mark (Fametta), Michael (Ann) both of Atlanta; grandchildren Ross and Zoe Zelinsky, Andrew and Evan McKinney; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister.
