Dave, not even sure where to begin; it doesn’t seem real. You made a huge impact on my life from the moment I met you on your back porch.  I keep thinking that you are on a trip visiting one of our members and friends.  Dave, you were never just my boss, we were family.  You told me very early on after coming on board at FEI that we are a close knit group; FEI is a family.  Boy, were you right!  You were a role model, big brother, and someone I truly looked up too.  You always had time for one-on-one chats, had great business acumen, and were one of the best public speakers I have ever seen. You always saw the positive in every situation, and I knew Dave Gheesling always had my back, no matter what.  I will cherish all our fun times and the countless memories.

Your two favorite stories to share with folks about me were about when we played Sawgrass and I couldn’t figure out reverse on the golf cart, and the video you played for everyone we met for the first time of me teeing off on the famous 17th. As you would say, “his stance looks good, his swing looks good - perfect form.” Then you would wait for immediate laughter when they saw that I swung and missed!  Haha!  Going to miss that my man!

When my son Carlos was born, you were so excited for Asti and I. You gave me so much advice and guidance on what it means to be a father and how that was now my #1 job in life.  I will never forget the day you met and held my son.  Even recently, my friend, as I had some family heartache going on you were there for me, and were the first person I called.  You always offered to help, no questions asked.  As we said to each other when I saw you last, “love you brother.”  Rest in peace, and rest assured we will continue to carry on your vision!

I still have not been able to wrap my head around Dave’s death.
I don’t know what to say.
The first time we met, in person, was in Tucson. I think. 2013-2014?? But we had known of each other before, FB meteorite community, I guess.
And we hit it off right away. He told me about Maddie, over and over again.
I had been given a “rose” by one of the mineral vendors, - Plastic. It was pretty, though. I gave it to him, to give it to Maddie.
I think it was the next Tucson Show – and Maddie was there too. Maybe it was 2 years later? No! One year!
And we had dinner, and Maddie sat next to me, and it was the most splendid experience. I love this girl to death! 
Dave stopped by for a short visit in ABQ on his travels, ~ 2015/2016?
And then he invited me to come out to Atlanta/Georgia to give a meteorite-related talk to MAG.  ……  And it was one of the most terrific weekends of my life. 2016. He was the most inviting host ever. Husband and myself stayed at his house. The black kitty stayed with us during the nights. Kasia, Maddie, Brad, Barry, Maddie’s friends, - we had a hell of a weekend. Hiking mountains, watching fishs, eating German Oktoberfest-meals, meeting Chris again, …..  it could not have been any better!!!!!!! Maddie – a very memorable memory (ha!) is that game we “played” in the car. Alphabetically going through whatever category! And when you were hit with the letter “Z” – your instantaneous answer was “Karen Ziegler” <3 <3 <3 <3 (I think the category was “famous people”    )  - Hahahahaaaaaa!! Love you! 
Oh! And then there was the Monopoly!!!
And Ensisheim. You and Katy came! And it was so lovely. Seeing Dave how much he loved you and cared about you!!! ….. it is unforgettable. And it breaks my heart  - knowing that you have lost him, and he has lost you. You have just been such an amazing symbiosis.

I can see by reading the many memories about Dave that he was loved, admired and respected. He was truly that and so much more. 
I met Dave at the Alpharetta Arts festival years ago when I was a vendor.  It wasn't the usual encounter with a courteous greeting, but instead, felt like we were long time friends. I can remember his voice and the interest he showed in my work.
He bought two that day and thanked me for my time. A few weeks later, I received a call, it was Dave and he wanted another for his Rock Room. When I delivered and entered this museum of meteorites, I was in awe of the collection.  You could see first hand how proud he was but humbled as well. He didn't brag or boast, it was just two guys hanging out. When I plugged in the lamp Dave ordered, it became more about it than his collection.  He made me feel I contributed to the atmosphere that he wanted to convey.  Before leaving, I remember Dave saying that he needs a few more, one for that area and another there. 
After many trips to Dave's office, where he bought one for each manager and more for the lobby, one for his Uncle, more for friends and even more for his home, I felt like I might be turned away by Kasia.  I never was, she always greeted me with open arms and a smile.  It's obvious that Dave liked what I did but more importantly, he wanted me to succeed.  He gave me welcomed advice on branding, marketing and creating an image. He introduced me to his daughter Katy who created a beautiful logo.  He texted and called to check on allthe progress.  With all that and the tremendous responsibilities he had, he still had time for me. I was just a guy in a tent at an art festival. Dave, once mentioned that time is precious and seize each moment of it. He said not to forget to thank those you meet for their time. I can't help but feel like so many others that Daves time with us was too short.  So Dave, I thank you for the time you shared and will strive to be the kind of man I should be. 

I was fortunate to meet Dave at the same time he was starting Floor Expo. I knew the moment I met him  that he would insure that  his big plans would come to fruition. I don’t think I need to tell whoever is reading  this that it happened! Dave’s passion, enthusiasm, communication skills, and ability to lead guaranteed this. But more importantly it was his ability to show that he cared about you as much as the next guy that made him different. This is evidenced by the love amongst the FEI family that he fathered. I can’t count how many of my personal friends Dave met and made a lasting impression! They still ask about him. He was one of a kind, a true friend,  and will be truly missed.

Dave is perhaps the only person I know who was genuinely interested in every person he met. I am exceedingly grateful for the time he took to get to know me, to share his passions with me and ask me about mine.  The care and interest shown by Dave was above and beyond anything he had do business-wise; he genuinely cared and I felt that. I know everyone on this page knows what I'm talking about. I'm extremely saddened that I will never again be able to engage with Dave on this level and feed off his optimism, compassion and warmth. I will be praying for Dave's family and loved ones...I hope you all are comforted by seeing how special he was to so many. 

You hear about people that operate at the 50,000 ft level and that does not even touch Dave Gheesling.  He truly operated beyond the atmosphere and one of his favorite things to do was collect space rocks and meteorites from around the globe. The stories he could tell about his exploits finding meteorites alone made for many great dinners together. His accomplishments in this industry are amazing: building a startup company into doing over a billion dollars in the group. Growing from Flooring in the Home Building and Multifamily categories, to Cabinets and Countertops, to the new Roofing division, his vision never seemed to waver on what could be next. Even in that growth he always wanted to work only with the best in each category and seemed to pick the best partners. There are many things I could say about Dave but if I had to pick just two, they would be: 1)The man never changed who he was; from a startup, to the top of his field, his ego never grew and he was true to his character and 2) being a Father was by far the most important thing to him. In business and his personal life, he was always teaching and being an example, while letting the person make their own decision. I told him many times he was one of the few people who could keep his feet on the ground, while his head was in the stars. I guess he is actually there now.

I could go on and on and on… I really love the guy and will miss him so terribly,

God's plan doesn't make sense to us right now, but we're all thankful that God planned for us to know Dave, to absorb his compassion, be invigorated by his optimism, and be reminded how no human connection is trivial. Like the space chunks he studied, nothing in this universe fragments at random or lands without purpose. Even a few moments with Dave showed us this. The air was different around him.

I am beyond being at a loss for words. Just an unbelievable loss.  I can only hope Dave is amongst the stars, planets and many other rocks of the Universe smiling.  Truly an exceptional example of a human being. May his memory be a blessing. 

Dave it has been great getting to know you over the last year.  You have helped shape our industry.  Our relationship started with a hand shack and turned into hugs very quickly.  I come to love the person you are and all the people that you introduced us to.   I will miss the hour strategy calls but won't forget them.  Till the next time we meet buddy, we will continue to push your vision!  

Still in shock about my Friend. He was there for me when I was going through a rough spot in life and I was there for him, when life did the same. I will miss his smile, kindness and what seemed like, eternal positivity (which is why I know we will all see him again). God Speed David...

If you had an opportunity to meet Dave and spend some time with him then you’ve been blessed. Authenticity is a rarity these days and Dave was as authentic as they come. His energy,  inquisitive nature, positive mental attitude and above all his ability to be empathetic are attributes very few possess let alone practice on a daily basis.  He was taken much too soon but no doubt for a greater purpose.

To the wonderful folks at FEI, carry on! Dave wouldn’t want it any other way. 

I have been blessed to meet many terrific  people  in the flooring industry. Dave was at the top. Not only was he totally engaged in whatever was going to put you in a better situation, he would follow up and make sure you were headed in that direction. But more than that, I will be eternally grateful for the time, encouragement, and advice he freely gave my son when he came on board several years ago. Truly one of kind who will be sorely missed.

What can I say.  I like so many others immediately connected with Dave.  Especially since a good friend, Tom Korte hooked us up with one another.  We immediately bonded on a  personal level as well as professional level.  Dave opened up himself on a very personal level and we had so many meaningful conversations that will always be fondly remembered and called upon.  You are one of a kind Dave and I can't begin to thank you enough for introducing me to so many great people through ECA and FEI.  The fact that you took the time to come to Columbus during a pandemic to visit with me and my team, and then trained me and Greg on hand gun safety and protocol says so much about you. I didn’t know Dave for very long but every time I was around him he brought such a tremendous amount of positive energy.   A true visionary in the industry and because of KBX our company is stronger. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Gheesling family.

Soft spoken words of wisdom were a part of any conversation with Dave. 

My husband and I met Dave a few years back when we joined the FEI group. We are with Active Plumbing Supply and have both been with the company for 30 some years. We have been involved with other buying groups in the past.  When we joined FEI and met Dave, he made us feel that like we had known him our entire life.  He made you feel like family and when we had our large meetings he we so full of fun and energy.   His passing is a tremendous loss to this industry.  
  

We met Dave several years ago when we attended our first FEI convention.  If you were fortunate enough to have ever met Dave, then you know that he was an exceptional individual. He was one of the most positive people that you could ever meet.  He was a mentor to many,  including me!!   We will miss you my friend. God Bless you and your family.     

We are heartbroken after learning of Dave's passing. Dave was our dear neighbor who welcomed us to Roswell as if we had been lifelong friends. We have sweet memories of his hospitality and spirit, his natural leadership, and how his quick wit commanded attention in a unique way amongst neighbors. Dave always knew what to say, and he was loved by all. We enjoyed our conversations on travels with him, his curiosity and world view, and appreciated his effort of speaking Spanish to our little one. Upon learning we owned telescopes, Dave brought beautiful framed photographs of the moon so we could display them alongside them and invited us to see his meteor collection. A host by design, he opened doors to all and shared remodeling tips and what he did to make his beautiful home a true showcase. Dave was a constant source of joy and laughter for us, and we so loved seeing him with Maddie and then growing his family with Kasia. When meeting Barry and Brad we learned that a generous spirit and warm smiles ran throughout the Gheesling family. His texts after we moved away made us happy, and we know the sky shines brighter now that Dave has joined the cosmos. Dave, thank you so much for being you. ~Anabell, Mauricio, Andrés

I've listened to Dave speak at all the FEI conferences I've attended.   He was so professional and down to earth.  He truly believed in what he was speaking about and had so much passion.  He was the kind of guy you could just walk up to and talk with and ask questions.    It is a sad day in our world to lose someone like Dave.  My heart goes out to his family.

Dave had a way of making you feel like you were the only person in the room.  What stood out most to me personally, was the little things Dave did throughout the last couple of years, just to "check in".  As busy as Dave was, he always took time to converse, or simply to send a text of encouragement.  Dave's example taught me how to be a friend to others.  His lessons were incredible.  He told me what I needed to know, not what I wanted to hear.  Only genuine people have that ability.  Dave was genuine, authentic, and consistent, and I will miss him dearly.  My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

When I first met Dave, I was enamored by his ability to connect to people. He was so energetic and authentic to me. I wanted what he had. Throughout the next year and gaining more access to him through the ECA affiliates, I confirmed what I knew of him from the beginning..... a one of a kind guy;  real, caring and intelligent.

Dave was always an inspiration to me and had an innate ability to ask the tough questions that made you question your position.   One of my goals was to be able to emulate that.  

He was an individual that always made you feel you were the center of his attention and that there was no one he would rather be talking to.  He never looked at his phone and gave anything less than full attention.  

Dave had hundreds of friends and each one of us, I am sure, felt as if we were on the top of his list of best friends.

I will miss him.  

Dave was one of those who made you feel special each and every time you visited. Not to mention that he possessed a unique talent which made everyone feel like they were his best friend. Although I had not meet Dave personally, his influence in FEI resonated throughout.  His family values, caring attitude and compassion for others was told by all that I talked to and showed in who they were also.  Praying for your family and that God will comfort you in these difficult times.

I am completely devastated and struggle every day to grasp the loss of my great friend and mentor Dave Gheesling.  There are so many amazing stories and incredible memories that flood my heart every minute of every day since I learned of his passing.  I think if I only had five minutes, the day he passed away to tell him all things I needed to say.  I would have let him know again how much we loved him and how much he truly meant to me and my family, especially my son Gage and nephew Tanner. I would have thanked him for all of the late night philosophical conversations and all of the amazing advice, even when I did not agree. I would have told him that he was absolutely the best and would have thanked him for the profound impact he made on my life. I would have told him that I am better today because of knowing him. I am so very sorry to learn of Dave's passing.  He had already done so much in his allocated time and had much more to offer.  I envied Dave's extreme passion that he invested in his interest and hobbies.  His meteorite collection was world class and his love and caring  of each specimen went well beyond the level of attention shown by most of his fellow collectors.  Dave was a very likeable person and generous with his time when helping the beginner class collector.  The world needs more Dave Gheeslings.  God Speed Dave! 

Dave was a very special friend to so many, including myself.  He was always there for me and I am going to miss my dear friend.  I cannot think of someone who I looked up to more than Dave.  Love you so much my friend.

This is shattering. The world was so much better with Dave in it. 2020 managed to somehow get even worse.

Seems like everyone had an instant bond with him. I did too. After kids' soccer was over as they grew up, we would meet occasionally to catch up. I relished those times.

We wish strength in faith, family and friends to everyone reeling right now. Family, we can't even imagine the depth of your sadness. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Saying that he will be missed is such an understatement.


When I am at the cabin at the lake and the physical work of the day is exchanged by the serenity of night, I love to look up to watch the clearest sky I am used to.

I was there last weekend.

The longer I looked it seemed to accumulate other, smaller  light sources around which against all rules of physics seemed to gain brighteness in the vincinity of the nucleus.

This is emotionally very tough having to come to grips with David s unexpected passing...so so TRAGIC! 
A few of us came up through the floorcovering industry as friends, 
sharing a close lifetime bond . The two of us would get together, tell jokes , discuss our personal lives, and reminisce about the past.

David was a true STAND- UP guy;
helping me get through the loss of my son...the most difficult time of my life . I ll always be forever thankful that we were able to travel life s paths together.

I was fortunate enough to get to know Dave at Georgia Tech back in the late 1980s.  He approached all aspects of life with much spirit, passion and enthusiasm and was always more interested in helping others be successful than discussing his own latest accomplishments.  In the years since Tech we would invariable run into each other and have time to catchup.  The attached picture is a good illustration of the man we all knew and loved.  Dave and I ran into each other at a Volleyball Tourney our daughters were playing in down at the World Congress Center a few years back.  As we caught up that day it was so apparent how much he loved and supported his daughter with her activities.   We will miss you brother.  

Dave was a great man.  He showed so much love to my two children.  From doing back flips at the pool with me, throwing the ball with my son to bringing my son and daughter into his home to show them his historic rock collection.   My children cherish the piece of Mars and piece of the moon that he packaged up for them as a keepsake.  He recently sent his newest book to my son in the mail since we have moved to Florida.  This doesn’t seem real.  He constantly kept in contact with my son to see how he was doing in soccer.  
Mr. Dave you will be missed by the HARRIS family.  Thank you for all of the good you have done for the world.

i have very few friends. dave and his wonderful family are some of them.  dave was one of the few that i looked up to. it was an honor to have known him at the level i did. we had great times together at my home in the keys. there are not enough words to express the goodness of dave.

Hello. My name is Travis Rouzer. I am 29 and have lived in Pennsylvania my whole life. I cannot  express properly what Dave meant to me. He knew of my asperger's syndrome and he always treated me like I was special. He vouched for me in the meteorite community once as veing super diligent and that he was proud and ill never forget that. When he discovered my largest meteorite was only a small stone, he shipping a over 1pound meteorite to my house just out of kindess. And when an expensive rare pa meteorite came on ebay he volunteered to buy the specimen and hold it while i saved for it. He saved it for 2 years until i bought it. The man literally was the nicest guy i have ever met. I will never forget him, and his meteorite hats and specimens i will never let go of. I loved Dave even though I had never met him, and personally voe to devote my life to making sure the family is happy and loved in anyway i can. Please, you are all in my hearts and thoughts. My condolences to Dave's family. I'm still in shock at the sad news. Dave was such a kind and generous soul. Always ready to support you with whatever you needed support for without question and always there with very wise advice. He was a doting father and family man and the best friend you could ever ask for. He was a better man than most and certainly a better man than I. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Dave, our shared passion for FALLING ROCKS will forever remind me of you.

Dave was always a pleasant person to have a conversation with. I've corresponded with him for the better part of a decade, and have bever heard him speak ill of anyone nor have I heard an unkind word directed towards him. His friendship, passion, and knowledge in regards to meteorites is irreplacable. You will be missed, my friend.

I had often regaled my family about Dave. What  a kind, generous, pleasant and good man he was. Then, one day, my family was attending a grandson's soccer match. Turns out that Dave was also there attending one of Kasia's son's games.  We didn’t see him.    But, as we were leaving I heard this guy running toward us. It was Dave. Well, as you might guess we stood there for about twenty minutes chatting. In that short time my family quickly came to recognize that all of my bragging about Dave was true. I was so grateful that day that my family had the chance to meet this wonderful man. RIP Dave. You will be sorely missed. 

During my son-in-law's battle with cancer, Dave gave incredible support to him and Scott's family. After Scott's death, Dave continued to keep his memory alive with an annual event to raise funds for the cure of pediatric cancer. If only there were more people like Dave, this world would be so much better.

I’m grateful to have shared our serious passion for meteorites, and our natural inclination for fun, at more than a few Annual Tucson Shows.  I’m thankful to have known Dave.

Dave was an amazing person and an amazing leader.   Once Dave became aware of a struggle I was having with health and fitness, he was incredibly kind and generous resulted in my getting and staying on program. Often in meetings, he was the voice of reason and counterpoint. He was also the ultimate gracious event host or leader. He will be greatly missed!

What a great loss for our family and for our world.  Dave was bright, articulate,  kind,  and well grounded.  He touched many lives in a positive way as he shared an easy smile with all he met.  We send hugs and prayers to family members and his many friends.
