Betty Clark Dreyer stepped into eternity with the Lord on August 4, 2023. She was born in Barrington, Rhode Island, on November 4, 1922. She married William Nelson Dreyer Sr., in 1944 and loved and nurtured 6 children, 13 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. The Dreyers lived in Massachusetts and Wisconsin, and they settled in Georgia in 1968.
Betty was an outstanding hostess, opening her home to family, friends, neighbors, missionaries, traveling pastors, and foreign exchange students for nearly 80 years. She even brought home two stranded motorists for an overnight stay during one of Atlanta’s snowstorms. Homemade spaghetti-and-meatballs was her signature dish, and her cookie jar was never void of homemade oatmeal raisin cookies. She was a fantastic joke teller and loved playing games with her grandchildren and with her friends, as recently as the week before her passing. Her favorite places to be were at church (membership at North Atlanta Bible Chapel), in the garden, on the shores of Cape Cod, and with family.
Betty had a heart of service, which started as a volunteer nurse’s aide in World War II, and she cooked in the kitchen at Camp Hope until she was 90 years old, often serving her own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was notorious for donning her fruit hat and singing the “Chiquita Banana” song at camp suppers.
Betty’s greatest prayer was 3 John 1:4, “I have no greater joy than to know that my children are walking in the truth.” Many a night, her children observed her at her bedside on her knees in prayer, and she could be seen reading Scripture in her chair every morning, without fail. She filled many journals with her favorite Scriptures and written prayers for her loved ones and for the world. She persevered past age 100 in the knowledge that God wasn’t done with her yet, and her spiritual legacy will be felt for generations to come.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at the Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076. There will be a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Camp Hope, 7011 Pony Lake Road, Dahlonega, GA 30533. www.camphopega.org
