Barbara was born to the late Joseph M. Topor and the late Genevieve Stopa Topor on August 11, 1938. She grew up in Chicopee MA, with her brother, Joseph, Jr. and a myriad of aunts, uncles and cousins. She attended Macduffie School for Girls in Springfield MA, and graduated from Smith College in Northampton, MA in 1959. She married Edmund M. Butler in 1961. They raised their two children, Suzanne and Ned, primarily in West Hartford, CT. However, in the mid 1970s, Ed’s job with Stanley Works took the family to Melbourne, Australia for 4 years, where they took every opportunity to explore that part of the world, and Barbara developed a passion for travel.
After the passing of her first husband, Barbara married Alfred Millard in 1994. They continued to live in West Hartford where Barbara had developed a successful real estate business. Upon their retirement in 2012, Barbara and Alf relocated to Roswell GA. For the next 10 years, they traveled extensively and spent quality time with her beloved grandchildren, Jake, Anabel and Luke. Barbara and Alf traveled all over the world, and the entire family accompanied them on a memorable trip to Poland to celebrate Barbara’s 70th birthday. One of her “happy” places was Lake Squam in New Hampshire, especially when all of her children were around her. In 2018, she fulfilled a lifelong dream when she and Alf rented an apartment on the left bank in Paris, France for a month, and experienced the City of Lights like real Parisians. In 2022, grandson, Jake Butler and his wife, Courtney, welcomed Barbara’s first great grandchild, Paycen Kay, which thrilled Barbara beyond words.
Barbara was an avid bridge player, lover of the arts, especially musical theater, and the consummate shopper.
Her memory will be cherished by her husband, Alf Millard; her daughter, Suzanne Butler (Rhett Polson), her son, Ned Butler (Robin); her stepdaughter, Monica Millard; her grandchildren, Jake Butler (Courtney), Anabel Butler, and Luke Polson; her great granddaughter, Paycen, and many extended family members and friends.
The Butler-Millard family will receive friends on July 31, 2023 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Roswell Funeral Home. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Thomas Aquinas, 535 Rucker Road, Roswell, GA on August 1, 2023 at 10 AM. Burial will take place in at the Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford CT at a later date.
