His first 2 years were spent in Mt, Rainer, Maryland. While his father served in the Navy during WWII, he lived with his paternal grandparents in Atlanta, GA. After the war the family returned to Hyattsville, Maryland for 4 years. In 1950, his grandparents, parents and extended family followed their dream to open up a family owned “Davis” Department store in Atlanta.
LeRoy attended 3rd thru 7th grade at Smyrna Elementary. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1960 and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1966 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he was employed by a heavy construction division of Dravo Corporation, building submarine dry docks, docks construction, coal mine shaft drilling and lock and dam construction.
In 1970, LeRoy returned to Atlanta to work for United Parcel Service (UPS). In Atlanta he met the love of his life, Sheila Farlow and they married in 1971. Their 49 years of marriage blessed them with two amazing children, Stacy (Davis) Alcorn, of Cumming, GA and Jeffrey Davis, of Tampa, FL. He was blessed with a civil engineer son-in-law, Brian Alcorn, and three grandchildren, Kelsie, Peyton and Cade who lovingly knew him as Pop Pop or Poppie. He was extremely proud and protective of his grandchildren, enjoying music and softball with Kelsie and learning the sport of soccer with Peyton and Cade. He rarely missed any of their activities. In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, he is also survived by his sister, Dottie Segassie as well as aunts and cousins.
LeRoy worked for UPS for 28 years, from 1969 until retirement in 1997, in the Plant engineering department with responsibilities for UPS buildings and facilities. Most of his career was spent with construction of new buildings, and alterations and additions to existing buildings. The first two years at UPS, he was a Project Engineer out of the Southeast Regional Atlanta office with responsibilities for new construction in South Carolina, North Carolina and Mississippi. In 1971, he was transferred to the Southeast Regional office in Dallas, TX, as Regional Plant Engineer Manager with responsibilities for buildings and facilities in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
In 1979, Leroy was transferred to UPS national headquarters in Greenwich, CT, with 10 years service developing standard drawings and specifications for construction of UPS buildings, and developing and instructing Construction Document seminars for US engineers. Two additional years of service was devoted to UPS environmental affairs in Greenwich before the corporate headquarters were moved to Atlanta, GA, where he continued his service as National Plant Engineering Manager.
While in living in Ridgefield Connecticut, he enjoyed coaching basketball and baseball, taking his Little League Team to win the town championship.
Before retiring, LeRoy spent a month in McAllen, TX, with other UPS employees from across the country with a mission to help government agencies and charitable organizations promote aid to the poorest counties in Texas. This trip inspired him to take several mission trips with his church.
LeRoy was a 27 year member of Alpharetta First United Methodist Church and the Open Door Sunday School class. His love of missions and music led him to sing in the Traditional Chancel choir, the OK Choral and the Jubilations Choir, to participate in mission trips to Mexico and Venezuela, to coordinate food collections and to be a team member of Wednesday night suppers.
After retirement, he volunteered full time for 6 years for North Fulton Community Charities, helping with facilities improvements and administering their holiday programs for seniors at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He enjoyed vacations and golf trips with his wife in all 48 states and several Canadian Provinces.
LeRoy’s life and legacy will be cherished in the lives of those who were companions on his journey of faith…..well done good and faithful servant! “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints” Psalm 116:15.
