He passed away after an extended illness on November 17, 2011, at the age of 84.
He is survived by Carol Ledbetter, his wife of 34 years, daughter Stacey Thorne, granddaughter Kira Thorne and cousins Richard and Ronald Miller.
Robert was raised in Roseville, served in the US Navy in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Under the G.I. Bill he attended Sierra College-Auburn and graduated from Sacramento State College with a BA and teaching credential.
Robert taught in the West Sacramento, San Juan Unified, and Sacramento City Unified School Districts. The majority of his teaching was at California Jr. High and Einstein Middle School. He retired in 1989 after a distinguished 37-year teaching career.
His interests included camping, sailing, fishing, reading, art and politics. He will be remembered by his family and students for his passion for and love of teaching. Known for his dapper dressing, Bob was a passionate, generous, and gentle man who cared deeply about his family, friends, and students. He had a spirited sense of humor and was always willing to share his wit, wisdom, and insight.
He touched innumerable lives and will be deeply missed.
