She passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at her home in Roseville, Calif.
Marilyn graduated from Smith-Cotton High School, Sedalia, Missouri; Class of 1965.
She joined the U.S. Navy where she trained to become an Air Traffic Controller.
Marilyn married Jay Smith in 1967 and had two children; Debbie and Garrett.
She moved to Roseville, Calif., in 1970 where she remained until her death.
She worked for the Roseville School District as an aide in the classroom
while her kids were young and also worked many years for Kaiser Permanente.
Marilyn retired after 22 years of service as a Research Program Specialist
for the State of CA in the Labor Market Information Division (LMID).
She enjoyed running; especially marathons. Her running accomplishments
include marathons in New York, Chicago, London and all over the “great state of CA,”
as she would say. Marilyn loved nature and especially birds. Her favorite
birds included Blue Herons, the Great Egret and the Western Bluebird.
She was an amazing person but especially, mother and grandmother.
She always put family first, always. Her selfless devotion to her family and friends
will live on forever. Her greatest love and enjoyment was her family and beloved grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Jay Smith, her parents,
Margaret Roar and James Abey, stepfather, Everett Roar, beloved grandmother,
Julia McIntire Brown, and brothers Michael Abey and Daniel Abey. Marilyn is survived
by four sisters; Barbara Martin, Greer, S.C., Margie Robertson, Warrensburg, Mo.,
Connie Roar, Warrensburg, Mo., Dana Roar, Sedalia, Mo.; and brothers,
Gary Abey, Boswell, Okla., Edward Roar, Warrensburg, Mo.
Marilyn is also survived by her daughter Debbie Tofft and her husband
Matt of Lincoln, Calif.; her son, Garrett Smith and his wife Jenelle of Loomis, Calif.;
and her beloved grandkids, Jackson and Hannah Tofft; and Annabelle, Katie and Lily Smith.
A memorial service will be held on August 5, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at
Newcastle Cemetery, 850 Taylor Rd, Newcastle, CA 95658.
