Kevin Clarke Sloss was born on May 1, 1952, in Santa Rosa, California. He passed away on August 1, 2022, in Roseville, California. Kevin had recently celebrated his 70th birthday surrounded by family and friends at his home in Citrus Heights.
Kevin grew up in San Bernardino and later called Citrus Heights his home for over 40 years. Kevin was happiest when he was outside, often preferring to sleep under the stars whenever he had the chance. As an avid outdoorsman and nature-lover, Kevin spent much of his life exploring California's diverse natural landscapes, splitting most of his time between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Santa Cruz coastline. Throughout his life, he mastered the arts of camping, backpacking, and fishing. When Kevin went into the mountains for a few weeks, you knew he would return safely, eager to share stories about where he went, what he saw, and most importantly, how many trout he caught. Some of his favorite places included the Ishi Wilderness, the North Fork American River, and the Mokelumne Wilderness. Kevin was also a skilled surfer who could spend hours in the water each day for weeks. He loved surfing his Johnny Rice longboard and brought a sense of style and grace to his surfing that most people never attain in their lifetime. Around the house, Kevin enjoyed playing the guitar, listening to music, reading, doing yoga, working with his hands, and gardening. He maintained a beautiful vegetable garden where he grew tomatoes, squash, onions, garlic, Indian corn, and much more. He enjoyed walking the local trails near his house along Miner's Ravine and the American River. Kevin's quick wit and sense of humor brought immense joy and laughter into all of our lives. With his remarkable depth of knowledge, Kevin taught us valuable life lessons that we will never forget. We will miss our brother, uncle, and friend tremendously, but carry his spirit and teachings with us throughout the rest of our lives.
Kevin was preceded in death by his mother, Jo Anne James, and step-father, Bill James. He is survived by his four sisters, Katie Williams, Maureen Taft, Kelly Paccassi, and Erin Sloss; brother-in-laws Brion Paccassi and Tom Taft; and his many beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
A celebration of life will be held in his honor, including a paddle-out in Santa Cruz with friends and family.
