Passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at his home in Roseville, CA.
Memorial Service will be on February 10, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Lambert’s Funeral Home, 400 Douglas Blvd., Roseville, CA 95678.
Jay was born April, 15, 1945 in Hannibal, Missouri to Marvin and Lillian Smith.
Jay graduated from Atchison High School, Atchison, Kansas; Class of 1963.
He joined the U.S. Navy where he trained to become an Air Traffic Controller.
He worked as an Air Traffic Controller at McClellan AFB and was a supervisor at Executive Airport in Sacramento, CA.
He owned Smith and Coates Insurance Services in Roseville, CA
He enjoyed pitching horseshoes and was active in the Moose Lodge in Roseville, CA.
Jay married Marilyn Abey in 1967 and had two children, Debbie and Garrett. He moved to Roseville, CA in 1970 where he remained until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother; John V. Smith, Atchison, KS. Jay is survived by two brothers and three sisters; Mae Gorrell, Leavenworth, KS; Ellen Carte, Roseville, CA; Mark J. Smith, Kansas City, Kansas; Logan J. Smith, Lincoln, CA. and Phyllis Brittain, Folsom, CA.
Jay is also survived by his wife, Marilyn, his daughter Debbie Tofft and her husband Matt of Lincoln, CA; his son, Garrett Smith and his wife Jenelle of Loomis, CA; and his beloved grandkids, Jackson and Hannah Tofft; and Annabelle, Katie and Lily Smith. And of course, Buddy and Max (the dogs).
His greatest love and enjoyment was his family and beloved grandchildren.
