Mr. Wimberly was born July 18, 1944. He was the son of the late Neal Augustus Wimberly and Elsie Pasley Wimberly. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Augustus Wimberly, PhD, and James Rice Wimberly.
He was born in Floyd County and graduated from East Rome High School, attended West Georgia College and Shorter College. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rome, where he served as an usher. He was a member of Cherokee Lodge #66 F & AM, the Camp Sidney Dew Alumni Association, was a football coach at the Boys Club for many years and coached Little League Baseball behind the levee. He worked for Georgia Kraft for nine years and retired from Georgia Power Company after 33 years of service.
He loved watching Alabama Crimson Tide play football and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He and his wife loved to travel and toured many countries.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Audrey McCreary Wimberly; son, James Stephen Wimberly of Rome; daughter and son-in-law, Leigh and Tim Shaw of Knoxville, Tennessee; three granddaughters, Taylor Shaw, Reagan Shaw of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Sophie Engal, of Juist, Germany. Several nieces and nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Wimberly were held Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Brown and the Rev. Tom Bridges officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens with Cherokee Lodge #66 F&AM in charge of gravesite rites. The family received friends Friday evening, September 1, 2017 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Daniel’s Funeral Home.
Those serving as pallbearers included the following gentlemen: J.O. Green, Jake Gibbs, Jim Armstrong, Leroy Minshew, Dale Farmer, Michael Wood, Gary Vincent and Carl Battles. There will be a called communication of Cherokee Lodge No. 66 F & AM Saturday at 9:30 A.M.
