Mr. Gregory (Greg) Kirby, age 56, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on March 22, 2023, at AtriumHealth Floyd Medical Center in Rome from complications of lung cancer. He would like everyone to know that he never smoked and that anyone with a chronic cough should get screened for lung cancer.
Greg was born on October 19, 1966, in Massachusetts to Judith Kirby Rickling and the late Peter Kirby. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Jack Rickling. Greg was a graduate of Satellite High School in Satellite Beach, Florida, and he held an undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Florida. While at the University of Florida, he was a member of Sigma Phi Episilon fraternity and Florida Blue Key and was active in student government, including chairing the University’s Accent Committee. Greg also held a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Georgia, where he met his wife, Mary, in Dr. Earl F. Davis’s legendary Tax Research class. He was a certified public accountant and was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Georgia Society of CPAs, and the Tax Executives Institute. He was employed by Paradies Lagardere as a tax director, and he previously worked for Dura-Line Corporation and BellSouth, among other companies. Greg was a loyal Gator fan despite marrying a Bulldog and living in the heart of enemy territory, and he was especially proud when his son, Alex, joined the Gator Nation and enrolled at the University of Florida. He was looking forward to Alex’s May 2023 graduation.
Survivors include his wife of twenty-six years, Mary, his son, Alex, his mother, Judith Rickling of Melbourne, Florida, two brothers, Brian Kirby (Maud) of Lyon, France, and Mark Rickling of Washington, D.C., a nephew, Wilson Kirby, of Lyon, France, and his in-laws, Jackie and Brenda Sellers of Hayesville, North Carolina.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Ledford’s Chapel Church in Hayesville, North Carolina, with Dr. Jackie Sellers officiating. Flowers are welcome, as are contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the University of Florida’s Fisher School of Accounting’s Doug Snowball Accounting Excellence Fund, the University of Georgia’s Tull School of Accounting, or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank Dr. Patricia Rich, Dr. Ashwin Sheelvanth, Dr. Brion Lock, and all the staff of Piedmont Hospital’s oncology department, pulmonary medicine, and infusion center for treating Greg during his illness. They would also like to thank the medical staff and nurses of AtriumFloyd Medical’s emergency department and intensive care unit for the excellent care that Greg received there.
