Born in Landsdale, Pennsylvania on October 12, 1933, to Eliza and Raymond Mack, Mr. Mack spent his childhood helping his father with his newspaper business, participating in sports and scouts, as well as singing on the local radio station on many Saturday mornings.
At the young age of 12, in his sleek apple green car, before a crowd of 75, 000 spectators cheering him on, he beat out the Class “A” champion of the regional Soap Box Derby of Philadelphia and earned a place at the National Soap Box Derby competition in Ohio.
Following graduation from Lansdowne High School in 1951, Mr. Mack began his college education at Drexel University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. During this time, he met the love of his life, Patricia Ann. They wed in June,1954 and in a short time became the proud parents of three daughters.
Mr. Mack’s journey to success in business began in 1964, when he was hired by Best Manufacturing as a sales representative for its industrial glove line. He became General Sales Manager in 1972 where he was instrumental in expanding the company’s chemical resistant lines that included several breakthrough firsts in the hand protection industry. In the early 1990’s, Mr. Mack established the Professional Care division which marketed gloves to various healthcare segments, including hospital, dental and medical sales with the introduction of the nitrile glove. Known as the N-DEX glove, it was the world’s first disposable latex-free examination glove, which are the blue gloves commonly used in medical facilities worldwide. In 1995, The National Industrial Glove Distributors voted Mr. Mack into its Hall of Fame for his contributions to the industry. Despite his success, he was quick to credit those who surrounded him during his career, saying “I’ve never been afraid to hire people smarter than I am because I know they’ll make me look good.”
Perhaps his greatest legacy was his unwavering dedication to his family.
Remembered for his fun-loving spirit, sage advice and witty one liners, he was a welcomed mentor to his many grandchildren. He commemorated every milestone for each member of his family with a card, phone call or better yet a cocktail or even a trip. He was happiest on a balcony overlooking the ocean or lake contributing his special pimento cheese or meatloaf to the festivities.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Patricia, three daughters, Pamela Mack Ramsey (Bill), Teri Mack Hopkins (John), Kristy Mack Curtis (Price); six
grandchildren, Allyson Paige Ramsey, Christine Ramsey Letsinger, John Lee Hopkins III (Aga), Anna Catherine Hopkins, John Owings Price Curtis, Jr., Haynes Alexander McShane Curtis and two great granddaughters, Adelynn Aeris Willis and Eva Louise Hopkins.
A memorial service will be held at Myrtle Hill Cemetery Mausoleum on Friday, October 27th at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow at the Coosa Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta or the Shepherd Spinal Center.
