Mrs. Dobbs was born December 13, 1937 in the rural area of Marshall County, Alabama, the daughter of the late Dewey Hobson Rains and the late Katherine Vaughn Levy. Her family moved to Gadsden, AL and there she graduated from Etowah High School in 1956. In 1957 she married the late James M. Dobbs and they had two daughters, Kelley & Kim. They moved to Rome in 1958 and established their family in the community. She worked as Executive Secretary and Bookkeeper for several businesses including Carnagie Library, Clyde Collier Photography, Toles, Temple & Wright, Hardy Realty and Jack Robbins Furniture. For twenty-five years she worked as bookkeeper and floor sales of women’s specialty clothing at The Town House in downtown Rome.
In addition to raising a family and working, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for ten years and Fellowship Baptist Church for fifty years where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and headed many committees. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority group for fifty-five years. She participated in many Rome Little Theatre productions including The King & I, My Fair Lady and Teahouse of the August Moon.
Survivors include daughters Kelley Burnett, Kim Watson (Mike); granddaughter Shanah Somerville (Ryan) and three great granddaughters, Ella Hoyt, Olivia Hoyt and Baylor Somerville.
A funeral service will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church, Burnett Ferry Road, Rome, on November 1, 2023 at 2:30 pm. Rev. Gary Graves will officiate the service. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 pm until the service hour. Graveside interment will be private for the family. The family respectfully requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church at 101 Broadus Rd NE, Rome, GA 30161, Fellowship Baptist Church at 314 Burnett Ferry Rd SW, Rome, GA 30165; or, to the Sara Hightower Library at 205 Riverside Pkwy NE, Rome, GA 30161.
