He was born in Macon, Georgia on July 18th, 1940, son of George and Bessie Self of Macon, Georgia. He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, Georgia, Mercer University, and the Medical College where he received his M.D. He interned at the Macon Hospital and began his residency in Dermatology at the University of Alabama where he was the Chief Resident and became a Board Certified Dermatologist.
Immediately following, he went in the US Army as a Major and served as Chief of Dermatology at Martin Army Hospital. He and his family moved to Rome, Georgia in 1972 where he began his practice of 30 years.
Dr. Self was a long time member of First Baptist Church where he was a lifetime Deacon. He was an active member of Rome Rotary Club and a member of Nine O’Clock Cotillion. He loved playing golf. After his retirement, he suffered a massive stroke in December, 2003 and was confined to a wheelchair. He was an inspiration to all with his kind spirit and loving manner.
Dr. Self was preceded in death by his parents and a son, William (Bill) Jackson Self. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Layton Self, to whom he was married May 31, 1964; two sons, Gregory Thomas Self (Christene), Sandy Springs, Georgia and Neal Jackson Self, Rome, Georgia; and grandchildren, Layton William Self, Cameron Thomas Self, Lauren Elizabeth Self and Conner Jackson Self. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Fellows, nieces and cousins.
During the last thirteen years, he had many devoted caregivers including Marian Hoskins, Maher Khatib, and Bill Gilliland who helped him for the entire time. Others who were there for several years were Manuel Echavarria, Tom Pulliam, Clyde Newsom, Michelle Graham, E.J. Watson and Paul Jones.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church with pastors Matt Duvall and Dr. Joel Snider presiding. The family will receive friends immediately following in the sanctuary.
