Mr. Wilson was born in Taylorsville, GA, on October 2, 1939, the son of the late John Wilson and Grace Head Wilson. Mr. Wilson served in the U. S. Coast Guard for 20 years, including two periods of service in Vietnam. Among the medals he received were: Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallery Cross Unit Citation, Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Medal, National Defense Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and the U. S. Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon.
In addition to his years of military service he was an engineer for the State of Georgia, retiring from Georgia Regional Hospital in Atlanta in 2001. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he served as an usher and was active in various capacities with the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. For hobbies he loved gun collecting, airplanes and trains.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Anne Dougan Wilson; children, Delmar J. Wilson, Gena A. Wilson, Grace Maria Wilson and Christina Sweeney; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A funeral mass was held Monday, June 16, 2014, at 12 noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Patrick Kingery and Deacon Stuart Neslin officiating. A reception followed in the Parish Hall.
A Rosary service was held Sunday, June 15, 2014, at 4 p.m. at Daniel’s Funeral Home led by Deacon Stuart Neslin and Steve Thacker. A visitation followed the Rosary.
Interment was in the Georgia National Cemetery near Canton, GA, on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. with honors provided by the military.
