David Lee Leffler, of Hickory , NC and Rome, GA, passed away on July 7, 2024. David was born in Washington, D.C. on May 14, 1938, to wonderful caring parents who greatly influenced the direction of his life. He grew up in Arlington, Virginia and was graduated from Washington-Lee High School where he served on the Student Council and Lettered in three sports. He received the highly-regarded Key Club Away for outstanding service to school and community.
David attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on a grant-in-aid scholarship, was a member of The Monogram Club, Kappa Sigma Fraternity and The Order Of The Old Well, an honorary organization recognizing exemplary service to the University. He was graduated in 1960 with a BS Degree.
For six years, David was a member of the Air National Guard. He received the prestigious American Spirit Of Honor Medal for setting a high example for comrades in arms.
David’s business career began with Simmons Company, a nineteen-year venture taking him to Dallas, Chicago and eventually to New York City, where he was a member of the Sales Executive Club of New York.
In 1980, David and his family moved to Hickory, North Carolina where he held an executive position with Century Furniture Industries. Later he became an investment advisor with Securities America, enjoying his work with Spectrum Financial until retirement.
One of his greatest joys during retirement years was working with his golden therapy dog, Miley. Together they brought peace and comfort to the elderly and helped children improve reading skills through The Paws To Read program at the library.
The Hickory community was a special place for David. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He was a charter member of The Hickory Sportsman Club and enjoyed serving on numerous committees in industry and in the community.
David is survived by his loving wife, Lynne G. Leffler; son, David(Brenda); granddaughter, Darby; sister, Margaret L. Knight(G. William Knight); nephew, G. William Knight Jr.(Susan and their three children); niece, Margaret K. Ellington(Kent).
A private service will be conducted on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at ten o’clock in the morning at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium in Hickory, NC.
Friends and family are cordially invited to greet the family immediately following the service in the church parlor.
